For all the Desi elders who keep complaining about the modern era, the sex education shows, and of course, about dresses, it’s high-time that they realise about the tradition-rich country being home to some of the banned Indian erotic movies which have highly explicit content. However, the banned erotic flicks have potential plots and great acting. Despite being banned in India, certain movies didn’t fail to reach international audience.
To help you check some of the erotica that are art and a havoc, here’s a list!
8 Banned Indian Erotic Movies
Kama Sutra A Tale of Love – 1996
The evergreen and iconic Mira Nair movie, Kama Sutra A Tale of Love, depicts four people’s love stories dating back to the 16th century. The movie hit the bulls eye of international crticis but didn’t sit right with Indian censor board. As expected, the movie was banned, and it led viewers to question why the country that actually is the father of Kama Sutra book would ban the movie. Ironical.
Gandu – 2010
Honestly, after I watched this movie, I had to sit and comprehend whether what I watched was a movie or an absolute porn video with a story. The movie has a lingering ominous vibe due to the colour grading works. While the movie intended to show the mindset of a boy who is witnessing his mother’s affair and how he’s expressing himself through rap, the ending left me perplexed. Anyhow the movie is banned, but it’s available on Netflix to watch.
Sins – 2005
Catholic priests are hugely respected around the globe since they dedicate their life to the religion and remain unmarried. Uh. That’s exactly what this movie is going to bash on. Sins follows the story of a Catholic priest and his sexual life with a young woman. After its release Christians were highly offended, and they successfully got the movie banned. But truth be told, there are cases of priests who’ve done these acts.

Bandit Queen – 1994
Bandit Queen is an action film based on Phoolan Devi, a woman of the lower caste who becomes a gang leader. The movie portrayed the harsh sexual assault she went through to turn into a vengeful woman. The movie received backlash from Indian viewers for the sex scenes and the nasty critic on politics. Nevertheless, the movie is outstanding and got banned for being too real and true.

Unfreedom – 2014
Unfreedom shows two different people’s worlds and their love story, which was highly viewed solely because it touches on the LGBT+ concept. Since the queer community has been a sensitive topic in India, not many appreciated the film. The obscene sexual assault scenes and the terrorism theme left people to criticize the movie, forgetting that the plot is absolutely earnest. The movie was released in America and received positive criticism, but the Indian censor board banned it.
The Pink Mirror – 2003
The Pink Mirror is probably the first movie entirely based on the LGBT+ theme. The story follows two drag queens competing for a man with a western gay teen. The makeup, the artists and the set is super promising, and the plot will be remembered!
Fire – 1996
Deepa Mehta nailed the direction of Fire, that stars Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das in the lead roles. Standing strong on celibacy theme, the relationship shared between the two women who are facing a hard time in their marriage and with their chauvinistic husbands makes the movie wholesome. India banned it because it’s spoke facts. Anyway.
Water – 2005
Deepa Mehta once again brought an epic movie, Water, where the main protagonist is a 8 year old young girl who is sent back to her hometown to live an entire life of penitence as a widow. The imageries are super powerful in this flick which bugged a lot of viewers who did know that back in time, suppression of women was and is still massive. And so, to stop the world from witnessing it via the lens of Chuyia, India banned it. Sigh.
