It is the kind of thriller where the mystery is not simply who did it; while also who can I actually trust; how much of what I am being told is true; and, most importantly, how badly can someone’s life unwrap when they pull the wrong cord.
If Mousetrap has sent you looking for more thrillers with that kind of paranoid energy, we have gone digging somewhere a little less obvious. Not Gone Girl, or The Invisible Guest, or the same five films that appear on “best psychological thrillers” list.
These are little discoveries: films that deserve considerably more attention than they get.
The Caller
Some thrillers come with explosions; some with conspiracies and multiple suspects, but The Caller just come up with two people.
That is perhaps the beauty of the strange 1987 psychological thriller. A woman living alone in an isolated cabin receives a visit from a mysterious stranger who claims that he needs to use her telephone only for a psychological game to follow, in which the question is not simply what is happening but who is manipulating whom.
The danger here is also not immediately obvious, but the information arrives in pieces, motives remain murky, and the person standing in front might not be anything they claim. The Caller is much smaller and quieter than Mousetrap but has the same sense of distrust.
The Hidden Face
The thriller comes with secrets layered on top. The Hidden Face follows a conductor whose girlfriend disappears, and he soon begins a relationship with another woman, but there is much more going on than he realises.
This is one of the movies where reading the entire plot beforehand is basically giving yourself some homework you of course did not ask for. The movie makes you think that you understand a situation, but then another detail disappears, and suddenly the thing you thought you knew starts looking different.
It is less of a crime thriller but has the quality of watching characters move through a mystery while the audience slowly realises that somebody knows more than they are asking.
The Perfect Host
This is a movie of a criminal on the run who decides to hide in the home of a seemingly wealthy stranger and thinks he has found himself a perfect place to lie low. However, it is revealed that he made a mistake.
The Perfect Host is one of those tiny thrillers where the less you know going in, the better it becomes. It keeps changing the power dynamics, which means you need to constantly reasses you examination of the characters.
The Guilty
The original Danish film, The Guilty, feels like a film people discover after they have already exhausted the obvious recommendations. The entire movie revolves around a police officer working the emergency desk duty who receives a disturbing call from a kidnapped woman.
The story is an increasingly complicated mystery: you only know as much as the protagonist knows, and every piece of information changes the understanding of what happened.
The Invisible Guest
This is one of the films that would not be really “hidden” per se. A successful businessman wakes up in a locked hotel room beside his dead lover, and the door is locked… from inside! He claims to be innocent and hires a defence to help him piece together what happened.
With the reconstruction of the night, every version reveals another story. The Invisible Guest understands that a thriller does not always need a giant action sequence to keep you hooked, and just a person telling you a story can do the job.

What we love about thrillers like Mousetrap is that the mystery is not just sitting in a corner waiting to be solved; it is dynamic. One minute you think you are watching a story of identity theft, but then it becomes about survival and so on.
