5 Series Like Not a Stranger to Watch If You Like Psychological Family Dramas

5 Series Like Not a Stranger: Something is unsettling when the danger does not knock on the door but is somehow sitting inside the house. It is sometimes in the person looking after your child; sometimes in your partner; sometimes it is your mother; and sometimes the most frightening thing is the version of yourself that you thought a major life change had erased.

That is exactly the kind of uncomfortable space Netflix’s Turkish psychological drama Not a Stranger (Seni Tanıyorum) walks into.

5 Series Like Not a Stranger

Released on Netflix on September 17, 2026, the series follows Funda, a painter who has put her career on hold after becoming a mother. When she finally finds a nanny, Nazli, who can help her return to painting, what should have been a little breathing room slowly becomes something much darker.

Nazli is a mysterious presence whose arrival changes Funda and her husband İlker’s lives forever. If Not a Stranger jas you craving more stories where motherhood, family, and buried secrets become increasingly difficult to separate, Netflix has a surprisingly delicious little rabbit hole waiting.

Here are five series to add to your watchlist.

Maid

If what pulled you towards Not a Stranger was its exploration of motherhood rather than just the mystery, start with Maid.

The 2021 limited series follows Alex, a young mother who leaves an abusive relationship and starts working as a house cleaner while trying to build a safer life for herself and her daughter. What makes Maid such a fitting companion is that it refuses to turn motherhood into a Pinterest board of happiness.

Where Not a Stranger looks at a woman struggling to reclaim her identity after becoming a mother, Maid digs much deeper into what happens when a mother has to fight for the right to build a life beyond simply surviving. It is less of a psychological mystery and more of an emotional rollercoaster, but the conversation around motherhood is there.

Behind Her Eyes

If the feeling that there is always something lurking under an apparently ordinary family life is what pulled you onto Not a Stranger, Behind Her Eyes is a pretty good watch.

The six-episode Netflix limited series follows Louise, a single mother who becomes entangled with her psychiatrist boss and mysterious wife Adele. What begins as an affair and an unlikely friendship gradually turns into a psychological game where almost everyone seems to be hiding something.

The Perfect Mother

The 2022 French limited series follows a devoted mother who becomes convinced that her daughter is innocent after she is implicated in a homicide, but as the investigation continues, the distinction between victim and perpetrator starts becoming increasingly blurry.

The Perfect Mother is a neat companion to Not a Stranger as both place women inside intimate family situations where trust begins to crack, and once that crack appears, everything becomes suspicious.

Pieces of Her

Pieces of Her is a 2022 series that stars Toni Collette as Laura and Bella Heathcote as her daughter Andy, who begins uncovering disturbing truths about her mother’s past and slowly realises that the woman she thought she knew has been hiding an entirely different life.

This one has a particularly interesting conversation around motherhood itself.

The Watcher

The 2022 thriller, The Watcher, stars Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as Nora and Dean Brannock. They make a couple who move their family into what should be their dream suburban home. However, threatening letters from someone calling themselves the Watcher turn their life into a nightmare.

The show understands the particular horror of discovering that the supposedly safe space of your family home is not safe at all.

What Should You Watch After Not a Stranger?

For motherhood and the emotional messiness of being a woman, Maid is the choice; for motherhood guilt and complicated female identity, The Lost Daughter; for a mother investigating a disturbing family mystery, pick The Perfect Mother; for buried secrets and a woman discovering that her mother is not who she thought she was, watch Pieces of Her; a family paranoia with a creepy edge can be seen in The Watcher.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Not a Stranger is that under all the secrets, suspicious glances and psychological games, there is a much more ordinary fear hiding that makes these stories linger a little longer than an average thriller.
