Loved HBO’s The Princess? Here Are Some Similar Movies Based on Princess Diana’s Life

HBO’s The Princess dropped on the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death and skyrocketed into people’s hearts with its real and scary portrayal of how media played a critical part in the making and breaking of the people’s princess. Directed by the Academy Award nominee Ed Perkins, the documentary film is produced by Lightbox in association with SKY, Academy Award-winner Simon Chinn along with Emmy-winner Jonathan Chinn.

An almost two-hour long docu-film, The Princess relies on media recordings and archival video footage and interviews of the princess and the royal family to tell the story which reaches the audience with a chill in the spin. Starting from Diana’s engagement to Princess Charles to her accidental death in Paris is still the food for conspiracy theories, the documentary film covers the entire royal life of Diana.

Spencer (2021)

Directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, the film is historical fiction with a dash of psychological drama that reestablished Kristen Stewart as one of the finest actors out there. Playing the role of Diana Spencer in the film, Stewart earned a nomination for the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress.

Diana In Her Own Words (2017)

A documentary unlike any other out there, this docu-film is by award-winning filmmaker Tom Jennings of 1895 Films. The film featured Diana discussing various aspects of her personal life, including her marriage to Prince Charles and other jarring matters of the royal household. It involves archival footage and photography along with rarely heard recordings.

Diana 7 Days (2017)

A BBC documentary film by Henry Singer that was commissioned by Prince William and Prince Harry, the documentary commemorates the 20th anniversary of the death anniversary of Princess Diana. It revolves around the Princess of Wales’s death and the subsequent funeral that was hosted and how it affected those closest to her and to the grieving world beyond palace doors.

The Queen (2006)

Not everything can be from one perspective, right? Well, Stephen Frears tries to tell a different viewpoint of the same incident we have all been wondering about- the Death of Princess Diana. The biographical drama deals with the story of how the royal family dealt with the death of one of its own.

The film was written by Peter Morgan and starred Helen Mirren in the titular role of Queen Elizabeth II. You can watch it, here.

Diana (2013)

We understand that not everyone is a fan of this Naomi Watts starrer yet this film has become a guilty pleasure for so many out there! Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the biographical drama covers the last two years of the life of Diana, Princess of Wales.
