The episode opens with Ryu Eun-jung telling a friend that her childhood friend, Cheon Sang-yeon, stole an extremely popular show’s script from her, for which she won an award. She’s miffed about it, and then we see how their friendship started. From the moment Eun-jung met Sang-yeon, the two butt heads. Sang-yeon had everything that Eun-jung didn’t, and it was a mixed bag of inadequacy, admiration and jealousy.

In the present, Eun-jung gets a surprise call from Sang-yeon out of the blue and asks her to meet. When they do, she gets right to the point – she wants Eun-jung to travel with her to perform euthanasia as she is dying of cancer. Eun-jung is shocked and taken aback, and tells her on her face that she will not be taking part in this. However, Sang-yeon writes a property over to Eun-jung out of the blue, which opens up several wounds for Eun-jung.

In the past, Eun-jung, now grown up, reconnects with Sang-yeon and she, too, feels jealous of her. As Eun-jung starts a relationship with Sang-hak from the same college, she is reminded of Sang-yeon’s brother, who died during his military enlistment. However, thanks to Sang-hak’s patience and unending charm, Eun-jung gets over her heartbreak at losing her first crush and has a happy college life.

However, when she runs into Sang-yeon again in college, she is shocked to learn that after her brother’s death, everything changed for her friend, whom she once envied.

What’s Sang-yeon’s connection with Sang-hak?

Although it seems at first that Sang-yeon doesn’t know Sang-hak, it eventually comes out that he was her brother’s friend after she went through his old chats. She eventually started conversing with Sang-hak, pretending to be her brother, and formed a connection with him. When she came to share the same college with Kim Sang-hak, she had hoped to date him, but when she realised that he was dating Eun-jung, she was left completely heartbroken and dejected.

Sang-hak eventually learns the connection between Cheon Sang-hak and Sang-yeon, which leaves him absolutely shocked as well, and he immediately confronts Sang-yeon. However, she plays it off as a coincidence, although when Eun-jung learns the truth, she is left heartbroken.

Who is M?

From one of Cheon Sang-hak’s friends, Dylan, Sang-yeon learns that her brother wasn’t romantically involved with her as they initially thought. Sang-hak, her brother, was actually transgender, and Dylan was the only one who knew that and respected that. Sang-hak wrote letters to his own self, hoping to one day come out and live their life freely instead of hiding the truth from everyone.

Why did Sang-yeon and Eun-jung’s friendship fall apart?

Sang-yeon and Kim Sang-hak gradually fall for one another while they try to figure out the truth behind Cheon Sang-hak’s suicide. When Eun-jung realises this, she immediately breaks up with him. The friends eventually stop talking when Sang-yeon, in a fit of rage, decides to pay back all of the money that Eun-jung had spent on her in some way or another and blames her for making her feel inferior. Since Eun-jung did all of those things out of love, she is immediately left insulted and decides to cut things off for good.

The two meet again at work years later, and although things start out well, albeit awkwardly, they soon spiral out of control once again when Kim Sang-hak joins their work team and Sang-yeon attacks Eun-jung verbally, asking her to stay away from him. When she proposes to him and he turns her down, she begs Eun-jung to stay away from Sang-hak, much to her confusion.

Years later, when Sang-yeon arrives at Eun-jung’s doorstep out of the blue, she is left baffled. However, things soon change when she reads her autobiography about their lives and how jealous she was of her growing up – she wanted to be liked just like Eun-jung, but alas, she was never that person. So, she resorted to destroying Eun-jung and, in turn, herself, to alleviate the heartbreak of not being good enough.

Reading her words leaves Eun-jung heartbroken, and she decides to go with Sang-yeon to Switzerland, but, at first, tries to change her mind and fight for herself. When she realises that Sang-yeon will not budge, she decides to go with her and enjoy the time before saying goodbye to her friend.

In the end, Sang-yeon peacefully dies in her sleep, and Eun-jung, heartbroken but at peace, bids goodbye to her.
