The Silent Noise Review
The first two episodes of The Silent Noise, a Filipino mystery series on Prime Video, showcase a surprising crime that leaves those close to Sam absolutely devastated and confused. Pushed to be accepted as a suicide, detective Manu Cortez sees through the inconsistencies and starts to dig deeper, invariably pulling Eli’s family into the mess. However, Eli’s family doesn’t seem to be completely innocent either, as his father, Anton, seems to have some secrets up his sleeve as well.
With only two episodes out and eight more to go, there’s not a lot to go off of in the series for now. However, even within these two episodes, it’s able to create a good mystery that makes us question who could have been behind. Sam’s death. It becomes clear that foul play was involved from the very beginning, so the question remains about who the perpetrator is. It’s also clear that Eli’s family was more than just friends with Sam and that there’s some complicated history between the two families.

The set-up for the series is done well, so much so that I couldn’t help but keep wondering what the secret could be. There are a few subplots here and there as well, but they haven’t been explored yet, so we will have to wait a bit for them to weave into the story. The relationship between Jackie and Anton is also a place of complexity, as, although they seem perfect from the outside, there seems to be some infidelity there. We will see how that came to be, but till now, we can smell the fish, but can’t see it yet!
Adding a murder in the midst of a family already fractured is interesting, and I am interested to see the twists and turns that will be introduced after this. Moreover, the brooding and tense atmosphere creates the perfect place for the story to evolve, and despite some melodramatic moments, the cinematography is great. The pacing is quite slow till now, so the tension simmers right under the surface. If you like slow-paced stories, this one might just scratch that itch.

The performances are also great, especially from Angelica Panganiban, who is excellent. Jackie is heartbroken after Sam’s death, but more so with Eli’s mental state. She tries to keep her family together, although you can see her frustrations towards Anton simmering. She is torn between protecting herself and finding the truth at whatever cost. On the other hand, Zanjoe Marudo is also great as Anton, the father, weighed down by suspicion and secrets. The family dynamic is clearly very messy and fragile, giving way to an emotionally charged experience.
Final Thoughts

In the end, I am looking forward to what comes of this mystery thriller. Who killed Sam? And how is the Carpio family involved in it? Handling themes like the weight of secrets, protecting family at all cost and love vs accountability, the series might just be a hit. We will just have to wait to find out!
