The Eternal Daughter Trailer: Tilda Swinton Helms Two Generations in A24’s Ghost Story

Older generations share an innate bond with all those places that have been a part of their former lives, A24’s The Eternal Daughter starring Tilda Swinton as both the extreme counterparts of the mother-daughter duo will present the same in the countenance of a horror story. Directed and written by Joanna Hogg, the film also stars Carly-Sophia Davies, Joseph Mydell, Alfie Sankey-Green, and more as part of the supporting cast.

Initially receiving its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2022, the movie is set to release in theatres this December. Moreover, in a magnificent feat of its own, the film has also brought Martin Scorsese on board as its executive producer.

The Eternal Daughter

In the trailer released earlier today, we see Swinton’s character as her middle-aged self, who accompanies her dual character of the elderly mother to their former family manor that has now been transformed into a hotel with barely any visitors except the Swinton’s dual selves. Within a limited time of living on the estate, “memories flood back” or more like creep back into their lives, whether they like it or not.

Roaming through the corridors, the younger counterpart of the pair revisits the ghosts of her family’s past. The longer they stay back, the darker it gets and further, it pulls them into the dreadful mysteries and memories, most of them unfriendly and uncanny. Thus, questioning her motives, Swinton’s younger persona is left drowning in a pitch-black family drama that should’ve probably been left covered as it was.

A24 describes the movie as:

In this ghost story from acclaimed filmmaker Joanna Hogg, a middle-aged daughter and her elderly mother must confront long-buried secrets when they return to their former family home, a once-grand manor that has become a nearly vacant hotel brimming with mystery.

The Eternal Daughter

The trailer, much like IndieWire’s David Ehrlich’s comment, demonstrates a defining performance from the actress as we “instantly forget the characters share a single actress between them”. Shedding her Marvel avatar of the Ancient One, the actress is back, leading by example in her definitive tone of cinematic excellence.

Blowing out the candle on the mother’s birthday, the trailer leaves us hanging with a growing ominous and eerie musical score that gives rise to several questions and predictions.
