The Bequeathed Ending Explained
The series opens with a man’s sudden death due to poisoning. Subsequently, we meet Yoon Seo-ha, stuck in an unhappy marriage with Yang Jae-seok. Suspecting infidelity, Seo-ha hires a private investigator. Soon after receiving evidence of Jae-seok’s affair, she gets a call about her uncle’s death—Yoon Myung-gil. The catch: Seo-ha doesn’t remember having an uncle. Detective Choi Sung-jun and Captain Park Sang-min investigate Myung-gil’s apparent homicide. Seo-ha discovers she’s Myung-gil’s sole living relative and inherits a substantial burial ground. A village chief pressures her to sign it over, raising suspicions.

At the funeral, Kim Young-ho claims to be Seo-ha’s half-brother, vying for the inheritance. A flashback reveals Seo-ha’s difficult childhood. Detectives Choi and Park, working independently, find Young-ho matches Myung-gil’s DNA. It’s confirmed as a sibling relationship. Myung-gil was poisoned over time. Detective Choi uncovers thallium near a golf course construction site. The motive becomes clear—Myung-gil refused to sell his land for the project. The village chief implicates Kim Kwang-soo, the construction owner. Kwang-soo is arrested, thinking the golf course is assured.
After a humiliating event, Seo-ha confronts Jae-seok about cheating and demands a divorce. Jae-seok refuses due to Seo-ha’s potential wealth. A heated argument ensues, resulting in Seo-ha kicking Jae-seok out. Soon after, Jae-seok is murdered, setting the stage for more suspense.

What was the Conflict Between Detective Choi and Captain Park?
Detective Choi and Captain Park share a complex history, evident in Park’s displeasure as Choi takes the lead in investigating the village where Myung-gil lived without prior approval. It becomes apparent that Choi, once Park’s superior, now finds himself in a subordinate role, struggling to adapt. While examining Myung-gil’s residence, Choi encounters a neighbour and stumbles upon a contract related to a joint consent form for a golf course.
The tension between Detective Choi and Captain Park is further unravelled through a flashback, revealing a night when Choi, leveraging seniority, left work early. During his drive, Park discovered Choi’s abandoned phone containing alarming messages from Choi’s son, who claimed to have been kidnapped, accompanied by disturbing photographic evidence.

Responding to the distressing messages, Park arrived at a desolate warehouse only to be ambushed by a group of delinquents, coercing Choi’s “son” to stab him brutally, resulting in Park’s enduring limp. Unbeknownst to the assailants, the captive was not Detective Choi, but rather Choi’s son, who had fallen in with a nefarious crowd. The injury intended for Choi ended up affecting Park, creating a rift between the two investigators. Choi’s son has since been arrested and is currently in custody.
Who Was Behind All the Killings?
Detective Choi and Captain Park clash at the precinct, fuelled by Park’s perception of being treated as a charity case. Park believes Choi isn’t a true leader and blames him for his past injury caused by Choi’s son. Unbeknownst to Park, Choi harbours guilt for blaming his son for his wife’s death, leading to a strained relationship. Returning to the main case, Choi learns Young-ho’s car is found damaged. Discussing DNA findings with Park, Choi suspects Young-ho’s mother is still missing. Park discovers an address in Myung-gil’s file, leading them to Myung-ho’s family. A shocking revelation unfolds: Myung-ho and his sister, Myung-hee, had a child together—Young-ho. Shunned by their village, they lived separately.

Myung-ho’s actions led to shamanistic rituals, and Myung-hee took Young-ho away, falsely claiming he had a special gift. This revelation unveils Young-ho’s troubled childhood. Myung-hee, who had a history of being bullied due to a cleft palate, is the true perpetrator behind the murders, linking back to the mysterious DNA sample. The investigation revealed that the dead bodies shared a DNA sample matching both Seo-ha on his father’s side and his half-brother on his mother’s side. This discovery exposed that Myung-hee committed the killings to secure a gravesite for his son, ensuring he could start a new life and finally be acknowledged as his father’s son.
Who Inherits the Graveyard in the End?
Detective Choi and Captain Park, upon discovering the truth about the mysterious woman in the village, visit Sung-soo, the man who initially pressured Seo-ha to surrender her land for a golf course. Sung-soo mentions a shaman near the village, potentially the woman in question. They find Myung-hee conducting a ritual in a hidden setup, revealing her intent to harm Seo-ha. Myung-hee, Seo-ha’s aunt, discloses a family secret involving an incestuous child, explaining her reluctance to claim the land. As Myung-hee prepares to kill Seo-ha, the officers locate Myung-hee’s home but realize her goal is to secure the land for her son, Young-ho, hidden by concealing her secret.

Seo-ha cleverly informs Myung-hee that Young-ho’s life is at stake, leading to a confrontation with Tae-seong, who attempts to finish off Young-ho. Tensions rise as Tae-seong plans to burn them alive in a kiln. Meanwhile, Choi and Park suspect Seo-ha’s involvement in Young-ho’s kidnapping, leading them to a dramatic rescue mission. In the chaos, Myung-hee sacrifices herself to save Young-ho, and with joint efforts, Seo-ha and Myung-hee rescue him from the burning building. Choi and Park’s backup arrives, leading to the arrest of Tae-seong and his associates. Captain Park is injured during the confrontation, symbolising a turning point in their pursuit of justice.
Young-ho wakes up, witnessing his mother’s sacrifice. Seo-ha, now free from the turmoil, opens a new art studio. Detective Choi informs her that kidnapping charges are dropped, thanks to Young-ho’s denial. Despite the resolution, Seo-ha and Young-ho haven’t stayed in touch. Choi reconciles with his son in prison, marking a step toward repairing their relationship. Seo-ha inherits the burial grounds, choosing to keep them intact. Myung-hee’s remains are laid to rest alongside her parents.
