That Night Review

In That Night, one would expect a heart-throbbing and tense murder mystery to leave us on the edge of our seats. However, this Netflix miniseries is a fantastic watch… but for very different reasons. Following three sisters who make one bad decision after another, after Elena, the youngest of the three, accidentally kills a man. More secrets spill out over the course of six episodes, culminating in a story about family and the price that our trauma makes us pay years later.

This is more of a thrilling drama than it is about finding a killer. We know who kills whom and it’s consequence from the first episode. The rest of the five pieces together the accounts of the different people involved in the situation and their perspectives on the night that changed their lives forever. It’s a terrifying ordeal that slowly exposes itself to us as we watch the sisters, bonded by trauma thanks to their mother’s unforgivable action when they were little, grapple with the idea of saving one another.

Most of the series explores these characters to their core, painting a vivid story in ways that feel fresh, even though the concept might seem obvious at first glance. There’s so much pain and suffering here from every avenue that your heart aches for the characters, as well as leaving you frustrated with some of their senseless decision. It’s interesting how the series is able to showcase the ripple effects of a tragedy from years ago and instil it into every character, so much so that it’s obvious but also absolutely shocking.

There are twists and turns in every episode that change the story just a bit the deeper we go into it. The more is revealed, the more chaotic it becomes to watch the sisters squabble. You sit on the edge of your seat as you learn more about them, acutely aware of what they are about to do but still hoping with bated breath that they do literally anything else. After the breathless first five episodes, the last episode ends on a heart-wrenching note, leaving us emotional.

The message here is simple – one should always do what is right and take the path of truth. However, when love is involved, what is really right and wrong? The selflessness that is written into these women is both respectable and frustrating. You want them to think about themselves for once, but you can’t help but realise why they are the way that they are. It makes it harder to hate these people, and you can’t have anything but empathy for their struggles.

In the end, That Night leaves you with a lot of thoughts, particularly making us wonder what we would do in a similar situation. With fantastic performances by Clara Galle, Paula Usero and Claudia Salas, we see the chemistry and the bond that sisters share in full effect. All three of them make the show stand out in their own ways.

That Night will stay with me for a long time after this. It’s one of those shows that might seem simple from the outside, but there’s so much nuance and complexity, especially due to its character-driven narrative, that you won’t be able to look away for a minute. With memorable performances from the entire cast, this one’s a must-watch.
