Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 22 Recap

Lawrence once again approaches Elsa, the current head of the church, under the guise of seeking divine guidance before starting their journey. Naturally, Elsa cannot refuse and even agrees to hear his confession. But here’s where things take a turn: Lawrence finally reveals his true intentions and what he knows about Father Franz.
Father Franz is the one who compiled stories about pagan gods, despite his belief in a different deity. This revelation is huge, as the entire town could face dire consequences if this information reaches Enberch. To top it off, Holo discloses her identity as a pagan deity, causing Elsa to nearly faint from the shock. After regaining her composure, Elsa decides to assist Holo by sharing the few books Father Franz wrote about pagan legends.
The episode explores several themes with finesse. The question of faith surfaces as Elsa and Lawrence discuss the nature of God, their reality, and Franz’s motivations for researching paganism despite serving another religion. Meanwhile, the looming question of what will happen to Lawrence and Holo once she finds Yoitsu adds emotional weight. However, they both choose to delay worrying about sad endings and continue focusing on their current mission.
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 23 Review and Recap

Things look bad for Holo and Lawrence because the village has finally started to blame them for their bad luck. Apparently, a Shoemaker in Enberch suddenly died after consuming wheat from this village. Now, a blame game has started where everyone wants to condemn the other for this predicament. The most obvious answer is the presence of Lawrence, who came to this town with some wheat. He might have mixed something poisonous into their supply.
But Lawrence obviously is not to take the blame for no reason, thus, there is another way. If he can contact his trading association, they can make sure to protect him. But if Lawrence gets protected, who will take the blame then? Well, the villagers will then put all the responsibility on Evan, whom they do not like at all. They have always been very adverse towards this young man, and framing him to be the culprit will not be difficult.

But Elsa can also be in trouble for siding with Evan. And as someone who might be harbouring romantic feelings for Evan, she can be judged more harshly. On the flip side, if the villagers decide to just take the blame themselves, the fate they will have to face is also not a good one. They might have to pay back the price of all the wheat they have supplied to Enberch. And there is also a chance that Enberch will drag them into an unjustified treaty later on.
Hence, after thinking about everything, Lawrence and Holo both decided there was only one way to save themselves from this mess. They must leave this village as soon as possible, even if it means to shoulder the accountability. But can they really leave everything behind and let Evan and Elsa bear the burn? If not, how can they get out of this situation?
Verdict

This episode was pretty interesting as we saw our characters having a tough time with something that they had no idea about. They were simply present at the wrong place at the wrong time. In this episode, Holo finally discovers very important information about her hometown. This also means we are pretty close to the end.
