Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham: The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang Review
In SonyLIV’s Malayalam series Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham: The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang, viewers watch a series that brings forth its plot in reverse order. Although the synopsis will make you think that this is a story about a bunch of men trying to steer their lives in the right direction, the reality is quite the opposite. Arikuttan and his gang of rowdy friends have been a menace since childhood. As they grow up, they get together with a corrupt police officer to pull off several dangerous stunts that result in their lives getting progressively worse and making enemies out of very bad people.
The series starts off with Arikuttan writing a biography of his and his friends’ adventures with the help of writer Mythreyan, and we watch the film through his narration of the events. From the get-go, there is not a lot of regret regarding their extremely bad actions that have not only destroyed lives but also resulted in several people ending up dead. The series, although a little slow at first, gets into a comfortable pace after a few episodes and follows an insane journey of corruption, heartbreak and the systematic failures that result in our youth making the worst decisions for themselves and others.
The series is quite interesting and makes you question why a bunch of young men would make one bad decision after another. You wait to see whether it gets any better, but no one really turns their lives around. Hoping to make their lives better and get the things that they have only seen in their dreams, the men dig themselves into a deeper, more dangerous hole from which coming out is almost impossible. The series will make you feel sympathetic for their plights at times, but the utter disregard for human life is almost baffling and takes away any sympathy that you might feel at the end of every episode.
The series features some fantastic actors whose performances elevate this crazy story. Sreenath Babu, Shambu Menon, Sachin Joseph Kalarickal, Sanju Sivram and Niranj Maniyan Pillai are fantastic as the titular 4.5 gang and bring insanity to the screen. I think we needed to know a bit more about these individual characters before diving into their sordid tales, but regardless, the performances are great. The story is a little kooky and will leave you a bit confused from time to time, but things fall into place for the most part. The end leaves you with more questions than answers, but I am guessing that there might be another season coming soon.
I enjoyed the way the story weaves itself from one insane crime to another, and Arikuttan’s justifications make you question your sanity. Although I feel like the series doesn’t question the characters’ morality or their reasons well enough for us to understand them beyond being rowdy criminals. I think a deeper discussion would’ve made for better, more engaged viewing.
Final Thoughts
Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham: The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang is an enjoyable series when you get into the groove of it. Its mindless crimes feel heartbreaking at times and leave us with a ton of questions. Viewers will enjoy asking a few important questions throughout the runtime, which I feel weren’t answered this time around. Either way, it has enough to keep viewers invested till the end and makes for a decent watch.
