What Happened to Henry and Alex in the End?

Once the e-mails shared between the two are leaked to the press, expected to be a job done by Alex’s ex, Miguel (also a journalist), it endangers the relationship between them, especially Henry feared coming out to the world as gay. His extolled position in the British Royalty had only expanded his insecurities, with every bit of his life being made public and people loving the orchestrated idea of him, barely knowing anything about his as a person.

Their respective teams, as a way to push for “damage control”, compel them to cut off ties with each other, barring them from any means of communication whatsoever. After Alex finally steps up to address the issue with the press, and voices his concerns and care for Henry to Zahar, she helps them get back in touch with each other, further revealing that she’s been in a relationship with Shaan all this while.

The two help Henry and Alex reconnect through their emergency contact numbers, and the latter then flies to London. Their warming chat leads up to the inevitable moment of them sitting down at the Buckingham Palace to meet King James III (Stephen Fry), also Henry’s grandfather.

Though acknowledging the fact that he’d read their mails and could see that they were in love wit each other, Fry’s character reminds Henry of his duty to the Crown, and being a “homosexual” was not an acceptable deed for the Prince. Just as this conversation is going on, Bea, Henry’s sister (Ellie Bamber) turns their attention to the huge crowds gathered outside the palace, all supporting the new revelations of Henry and Alex’s relationship. Thereafter, overwhelmed to see the people accepting his true self, Henry firmly defies his grandfather’s words, and with Alex, walks out to express his gratitude to them by waving at them.

Did Ellen Claremont Win Her Re-Election Campaign?

Eventually, we catch both the leading characters back in Washington D.C., awaiting to here the results of the election. Alex thinks of all possible negative outcomes, but is glad to have Henry by his side, who helps him calm down. The results then victoriously reveal that  Ellen Claremont, Alex’s mother (Uma Thurman) has been re-elected as the US President, and their entire family, along with Henry, walks to thank the people for their support, further making the two’s relationship public despite Alex’s previous scares.

Following that much-needed triumphant moment, which also proved that Alex’s initiative in helping her mother’s campaign really came through for her in the end, it can be expected that he’ll only be included more in such talks in the future. Later, he and Henry go to his home in Texas, the key for which Alex had given his boyfriends for keepsake and something to remember him by in his absence. And the movie ends with both of them finally accepting their relationship, just as much the world has (we don’t talk about Miguel), and pushing aside their insecure thoughts to be at peace with what they’ve built together.
