Will Ranbir Kapoor Stop Playing Emotionally Vulnerable Characters Post Shamshera? Actor Says “Never Say Never”

Ranbir Kapoor has started the promotions of his upcoming film Shamshera. Directed by Karan Malhotra, the period action film also stars Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt. The teaser, trailer and songs of Kapoor’s upcoming film have created a lot of excitement. Fans can’t wait to watch Ranbir on the big screen after 4 years, after his last release Sanju (2018).

In Shamshera, Ranbir is doing a lot of action scenes. He sported a long beard, a rugged look for a story set in the 1800s. From Saawariyaa to Wake Up Sid to Rockstar to Tamasha, the actor has shifted from his portrayal of a millennial boy to a fighter.

However, when the Shamshera trailer was released, some fans shared how they miss Ranbir’s portrayal of characters that didn’t care about how “masculinity” is shown on screen. Usually, it’s women characters that we see showing the emotional side most on-screen. But Ranbir is one of the few male actors who showed the emotionally weak moments or insecurities of a man on screen. He showed the effeminate side of men.

During the group interactions, Kapoor was asked about how he took a dig at himself in a recent YRF video for playing the characters which are closer to many millennials’ hearts. They are vulnerable or have a bit of a feminine side to them. The actor was asked if he knows what people think of his past movies and if he would stop taking such roles where he has to show his emotional vulnerability?

Ranbir Kapoor answered, “No, Shamshera has that side also. If you talk about emotions, that’s a lot in Shamshera. But just because I’m doing this doesn’t mean I’ll stop doing those films. If those films come to me, I’ll do them. I am not aware of what the audience sees. I, as an actor, only focus on the work.”

Ranbir said he’s grateful that at the start of his career, he played a young boy on screen. But that can’t happen now. “Unfortunately, now I’m 40, so I can’t play a boy. I wish I could play a boy in my life. I’m like the Harry Potter of Indian cinema. I’ve just not grown up in my movies. So it’s high time. Of course, you know, never say never. If I get a good script at a good time to show my effeminate side, I will always take it up,” the actor said.

He added, “But as of right now, the opportunity of Shamshera was too great for me. I never had an opportunity like this. I’m very happy doing a film like this.”

Shamshera will release in theatres on July 22. The actor will be next seen in Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Alia Bhatt and Mouni Roy. The fantasy adventure film is scheduled to release on the big screens on September 9, 2022.
