Queen Mantis Episode 6 Recap

The episode opens with Yi-shin arriving at Min-jae’s crime scene to break down everything that is in front of them. She tells the team that this was done in haste and isn’t even the killer’s style. She eventually shows them a beautiful painting done by Min-jae wherein Yi-shin is sitting on the beach with Su-yeol while Min-jae looks from afar, and the story leaves Su-yeol heartbroken, especially when he replays his voicemail.

At this, he asks Yi-shin to help him catch the perpetrator, promising to think and act like her if she does so. Na-hee is left speechless as she overhears this conversation.

That night, Su-yeol starts to go through the Mantis files again to get a better grasp of the situation and the person he is up against. The next day, Yi-shin has another uncomfortable conversation with the copycat killer, calling them pathetic for doing a sloppy job. They eventually call Yi-shin back after disconnecting and shows her everything that he’s about to do – another murder.

The team get a lead and rushes out to a nearby hotel, but Yi-shin warns him to be careful as bloodshed is imminent. When they reach the spot, though, they have a difficult road ahead of them as they have to search every room from floors 3 to 13. Eventually, Su-yeol figures out the room number, but his plan is foiled with Na-hee pulls the fire alarm.

The perpetrator escapes, leaving Su-yeol injured, but the victim eventually survives. However, Na-hee decides to investigate Su-yeol because she can’t shake the feeling that something is up with him. Later, Su-yeol meets Yi-shin and, in a moment of clarity, bridges a crucial clue – his mother and the perpetrator were humming the same tune. Comparing the case files, Yi-shin further tells him about some inconsistencies, eventually reminding him about Kang Yeon-jung and warning him that Jung-yeon might be in danger.

With the police now keeping an eye on his wife, Su-yeol and Na-hee talk to Yeon-jung’s mentally unstable mother, and Hyuk and Sung-kyu talk to someone on Joy’s friend list, learning about a crazy story about someone who had met Joy. Elsewhere, in a rather shocking twist, Yeon-jung’s mother tells them that her son killed a neighbour next door and is trying to become a girl by putting on makeup. The team immediately tries to find out who this could be while Sung-kyu looks into Su-yeol, finding his picture with Yi-shin in Min-jae’s studio.

When Su-yeol returns with good news about a doctor who might lead to their killer, Na-hee asks him to leave the team, and a fight breaks out. When Jung-ho tells them about their latest victim succumbing to his wounds, a frustrated Su-yeol goes home and tells Jung-yeon everything, which leaves her confused and devastated.

Queen Mantis Episode 6: Jang Dong-yoon

I love this show (till now), but this ending for the week has been quite frustrating. The series has, by far, brought forth grounded, albeit emotionally driven characters, but this episode showcases the police to be quite silly and immature. I get not trusting someone and all that, but going as far as to investigate them and doing all of this without context is just frustrating for the viewers.

With two more episodes to go and a lot of questions to be answered, here’s hoping the series picks up in a better way. Otherwise, this has all been for nothing.
