Permanent Roommates Season 3 Review

When it comes to human interactions and relationships, TVF has some of the most relatable content. Whether it be TVF Pitchers, TVF Tripling, Kota Factory, Hostel Daze, Panchayat or the several other shows that the OTT platform has come up with, most have always reached the heartstrings of viewers in a way unlike any other.
Being India’s first web series, Permanent Roommates‘s relatable characters, open mindset and believable situations mixed with funny but smart humour made it a sensation amongst people in 2014 when the first season came out and 7 years after the second season left Mickey and Tanu in a confusing and difficult situation, we are back again trying to dissect their quirky but annoying issues and little quips.

After the rather devastating but hopeful ending of season 2, Mickey and Tanu jump back from their setbacks better than ever. It’s heartening seeing the two have their daily fights, with Tanu getting frustrated with Mickey’s lack of attention to detail and the cute Mickey continuining to try to win Tanu’s heart every other day. However, we see another side of the relationship this time around – having spent years together, things are slowly getting mundane for Tanu, whose drive to do better with her life is stagnating things for her.
Permanent Roommates season 3 continues the streak that the series had started, delivering important emotions and everyday situations that so often get lost in the hustle and bustle of crime and horror content online. The series has always been a very comforting watch personally; you relate to both the characters one way or another as they try and figure out their life along the way. There is a lot of fighting and annoyed sighs but that’s life when you live with someone. It’s how the characters interact and eventually solve their issues that really makes you feel some sort of way.

This season, we have a few major problems. Of course, not as major as losing a child or anything but it’s still pretty raw and emotional. Although you have moments when you, as a viewer, also get frustrated with Mikesh or Tanya but they come back with emotional justifications that contextualise things really well. These moments of emotion are really heartbreaking to watch, espeically when it comes from Mikesh’s side because he’s always the collected one of the two.
On the other hand, we get a good look into Lata Chaudhary’s character as well in this season. Lata (played by the wonderful Sheeba Chaddha) is going through her own troubles as she tries to mediate between her son and daughter-in-law in a very awkward situation. As most mothers, she’s warm, affectionate and understanding wihtout being suffocating. Her character and her interactions with her newfound friends in a breath of fresh air when the “youngsters” start getting a bit too snippy.

My only gripe with this season is that it feels a bit too dramatic for Permament Roommates standards. Although things flow super well and issues get discussed and dissected, there are moments, espeically in the last episode, wherein the runtime drags because the situation between Mikesh and Tanya is made out to be more than it actually is.
Sure, a change of scenary is always a major life event but even then, the way that it is handled in the last episode left a weird taste in my mouth. It is extremely forced and dramatic and I failed to understand why the situation had to be done in that way at that time – the urgency was quite a stark contrast from the tone and the pace of the show in general.
Other than that, Sumeet Vyas and Nidhi Singh continue to be adorable as Mikesh and Tanya. Vyas, espeically, is just so sweet portraying the teddy bear personality of Mikesh that you can’t help but like him even when he is wrong. Tanya, the hotheaded one of the two, is more sensible than her partner and they together portray their character so wonderfully. However, the best of the series is probably Deepak Kumar Mishra – fans of the show will definitely understand why. Chaddha’s Lata is warm and nurturing and, as always, she plays her character with grace and a lot of love.
Permanent Roommates Season 3 Review: Final Thoughts

Permanent Roommates Season 3 continues to be a warm and emotional season but it’s the ending that doesn’t make sense to me. However, it’s the characters that make this season a sweet watch, with some amazing cast members giving their 100% to be nothing but relatable. With a very short runtime, it’s definitely worth the watch.
Permanent Roommates Season 3 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
