May 2022 feels is a great month for horror. From true crime to supernatural to something a bit too raw or different, there’s something for everyone this month. Showing the deepest and darkest corners of people’s minds, these horror movies are sure to leave you with some sleepless nights.

The Staircase: For all the true-crime junkies out there, The Staircase is going to be it. The miniseries is written and created by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn and stars Colin Firth as Michael Peterson in the lead roles. The series is about the circumstances surrounding the death of Kathleen Peterson, who was found at the bottom of the staircase of her home and her husband, Michael Peterson, was convicted of the murder. It’s based on the 2004 docuseries of the same name by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade.

The miniseries will release on HBO Max.

The Twin: Psychological horror film The Twin promises some disturbing horrors in the form of a dead twin. Let’s be real, the “power” of twins has been long a topic of discussion in horror movies. These apparently mystical powers that twins share are a topic of much conversation and intrigue. Directed by Taneli Mustonen, the movie stars the amazing Teresa Palmer, Steven Cree and Tristan Ruggeri in lead roles.

The movie will release on Shudder.

The Sadness: Taiwanese horror film The Sadness is supposed to be the most disturbing movie of this year. Directed by Rob Jabbaz, the film stars Berant Zhu and Regina in lead roles and is about a mysterious viral pandemic that turns people into crazed, homicidal maniacs who do despicable things in their frenzied state. The horror flick has a runtime of 99 minutes.

The Sadness is slated to release on Shudder.

13 May

Firestarter: This Keith Thomas-directed sci-fi horror film is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. Starring Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Sydney Lemmon in lead roles, the movie is a reboot of the 1984 film of the same name. The film is about a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities and a father’s attempts to shield her from government officials who intend to use her. The movie has a runtime of 110 minutes and is slated to release on Peacock.

The Innocents: 2021 Norwegian supernatural thriller The Innocents will make you want to never have children. With a cast featuring Rakel Lenora Fløttum, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad and Sam Ashraf in lead roles, the movie is a stunning showcase of the brutality of childhood and growing up. The film’s main takeaways are the tense atmosphere and the amazing acting from the child actors. The film is going to release in select theatres in the US and on VOD platforms.

Monstrous: Supernatural thriller Monstrous is directed by Chris Sivertson and stars Christina Ricci, Colleen Camp and Lew Temple in lead roles. The film’s trailer starts off with a mysterious spring in its step but it’s quite apparent that there’s something mysterious lurking behind the corner and it’s out to get Laura and her son Cody. The film is slated to release in select theatres in the US and on VOD platforms.

Men: A24 has always come up with horror movies that are different, unique and leave a deep impact. Men promises to be just that and a bit more. After her husband’s tragic death, Harper retreats to the charming English countryside to regroup and recollect herself. However, odd villagers, a mysterious entity from the woods and her own grief give birth to a frantic and dreadful situation. The film is slated to release in theatres by A24.
