Head Over Heels Ending Explained
The series starts with shaman Park Seong-ah meeting Bae Gyeon-woo for the first time at the temple after his grandmother visits to rid him of evil spirits who have brought bad luck to his life since he was a child. Although Gyeon-woo hates shamans, who have only taken advantage of their difficult life, Seong-ah is immediately smitten and vows to protect him, realising that he only has a few days to live. Meanwhile, another person in Gyeon-woo’s life is shaman Yeom Hwa, who has been hired by his family to keep him and his bad luck at bay.
She has constantly left him traumatised over the years, and now he only tolerates her while she tries to take advantage of him. Soon, his grandmother dies, and heartbroken, Gyeon-woo starts to feel suicidal. Sensing this, Seong-ah decides to plant a protective amulet around him. When that falls short, she herself becomes the amulet and constantly keeps touching him in order to rub her good energy off on him. Before long, Gyeon-woo warms up to her and the two become close.

On the other hand, Yeom Hwa plans to give rise to an evil deity to bring her dead child back. It’s an impossible task, one that results in her offering Gyeon-woo as a sacrifice. Her plan works, and the evil entity, Bong-su, possesses Gyeon-woo. Now racing against time, Seong-ah tries to save Gyeon-woo from him while Yeom Hwa continues to push her agenda.
Who is Bong-su? What is his real name?
Bong-su is the spirit of a young boy who died during the war. He wanted to give his friend’s mother’s ring back to her, but, having died far away from home in the forest, he isn’t able to do so. Being entrusted with an important task, his spirit roamed around with this unfinished task, and that’s when he started getting manipulated by Yeom Hwa to do her evil deeds.

Unfortunately for her, Bong-su refused to listen and, despite all of her tricks, wanted to deliver the ring to its rightful owner and get to live his life as a human. In episode 12, however, we learn that there never was a friend; Bong-su, or Yoon-bo, died alone in the forest, and it was his mother’s ring that he desperately tried to return. In his last moments, we thought of this mysterious other person with whom he entrusted his beloved ring, but he actually died without having been able to do anything with it.
Is Seong-ah able to save Gyeon-woo?

Gyeon-woo almost dies trying to save Seong-ah from Bong-su, thanks to Yeom Hwa doing an exorcism on him. But, thankfully, Seong-ah realises what is happening and tearfully pleads to her patron deity to help her in her time of need. General Dongcheon’s spirit arrives right on time to help her, and together with Flower Master and Auntie, they are able to save both Yeom Hwa and Gyeon-woo and lead Bong-su to the afterlife peacefully.
What does the ending signify?

In the end, we have jumped much into the future, and Gyeon-woo has found his way to compete in the Olympics. Seong-ah continues to help humans and spirits in their difficult moments, as signified by her taking the time to sit with a crying young spirit until he moves on. Although she wanted a normal life for herself, in the end, she is content with her life of helping others as the two continue on their path of happily ever after.
