Genie Make a Wish Review

Netflix Kdrama Genie Make a Wish is a delightful fictional watch that is hilariously unhinged and shockingly effective at communicating the perils of greed and the flaws of human beings, along with showcasing a love story that overcomes millennia. The series is sweet and the world-building is fantastic, but at 13 episodes, you realise that the story is being stretched too thin.

First things first, Genie Make a Wish‘s worldbuilding, characters and emotions are absolutely gut-wrenching. The B and C plots will move you on more than one occasion, while others will leave you with a few difficult thoughts. The series does a great job of bringing these stories back over and over again, reminding us that not to go overboard with our wishes and letting greed dictate our lives is always a terrible idea. The smaller stories are surprisingly memorable and, with some fantastic special appearances, viewers will have a field day.

On that note, the series does a great job of building a mystical world full of creatures who can do anything and everything. It’s easy to believe and easier to lose ourselves in. The characters, moreover, are complete human beings who are believable and easy to root for. Moreover, the performances are fantastic, and every actor does a brilliant job of giving their 100% to these characters.

Kim Woo-bin and Bae Suzy are the protagonists in this drama, and along with Steve Noh, they are fantastic. I loved watching the romance between the leads blossom. It’s sort of a slow burn, but it makes your heart flutter at every stolen glance. Noh, meanwhile, is a VERY handsome Soo-hyun, and it’s hard not to see him as the angel of death. I mean, I believe it! Other than them, Ahn Eun-jin, Ko Kyu-pil, Lee Joo-young and Kim Mi-kyung are great supporting performers who complete this world and make the leads’ journey even more impactful.

That being said, the series is entirely too long, and after a while, it’s painfully apparent that it’s stretching itself too thin. This could’ve easily been shorter and required much more condensing for it to be truly impactful. I found myself losing interest far too many times than I would want, and viewers might find themselves losing interest in keeping watching more often than not. The duller moments are somewhat bearable thanks to the humour, but overall, it’s unnecessarily long. As a result, some sequences will feel too complex or convoluted. There are several moments when characters’ decisions and motivations don’t make sense, and viewers will be left scratching their heads.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Genie Make a Wish is quite entertaining but far too long to binge in one go. It’s only because it’s too dense and stretched out to feel interesting at some points, and breaking up the watching experience might fix that. The series had all the hallmarks to be a memorable watch, but it’s the length that truly is its own worst enemy.
