When self-proclaimed geek Harriet finds herself snatched from her bustling but mediocre life in her high school and into the limelight of the New York fashion life, she finds her life turned upside down as she goes on a journey to find herself as she balances school and high fashion.

geek girl review

Netflix’s newest YA drama Geek Girl gets it – it gets teenage issues and it gets neurodivergence and the nuanced issues that we all go through even in adulthood. This series has ‘IT’, whatever the magical feeling the series constantly mentions about their protagonist. The storyline is simple but told in an effective and arresting way, with the humour nailing every time on-screen. There is no over-the-top drama, silly humour or sexual moments that might leave you hating the experience. Rather, the series is fast-paced but restrained storytelling that feels natural and hassle-free.

Harriet is the perfect protagonist for a show such as this – she is perfectly naive but also totally kickass in a very fun amalgamation. The series highlights everything that is great about her but also doesn’t forget to showcase her shortcomings. Emily Carey is so awesome in this role – she’s perfect as the painfully awkward fact-spouting teenager who is trying to figure herself out but mostly finds herself a little lost. Harriet is relatable and Carey makes her look and feel effortless at every step.

When the series starts, you might wonder whether you’re watching the same old series again but after the first few episodes, Harriet’s antics and internal monologues start to feel extremely dear and oddly close to the heart. You know that she is a good person at heart but being a teenager makes everything oh-so difficult. Plus, her awkwardness and subtle quirks will feel so sweet that you’d want to help her get over her obstacles and save her from her embarrassing moments. Most of all, you grow so fond of her that it makes you want to jump straight to the next episode when one ends.

geek girl review

It’s the exploration of Harriet’s character that really sets the series apart from similar shows. The series takes its time showcasing Harriet as a caterpillar who is just edging to come out of its cocoon and become a butterfly. She isn’t forced into the modelling life but she wants this – it’s something she never knew she was good at, but a peek into this exciting new life opens up avenues of herself that she was previously unaware of. Is a coming-of-age show showcasing anything new? Not exactly – but it doesn’t matter because it’s the characters who are meant to stand out.

Apart from Harriet, all of the other characters are also really sweet. Harriet’s parents are surprisingly tender and empathetic and although they also go through a few hiccups of their own, it’s not something that they don’t acknowledge. Then there is Nick, everyone’s heartthrob who finds a liking to Harriet at first glance. He’s deliciously good-looking and has beautiful chemistry with Carey and their youthful banter and awkward conversations are so cute, so much so that you won’t be able to look away.

However, it’s Wilbur I loved the most. He’s delightfully cute, he’s funny and edgy and constantly supports Harriet every step of the way. Emmanuel Imani is excellent as the edgy with a soft heart Wilbur – we need more characters like him in life!

In the end, it’s the underdog pushing through the curveballs that life throws her way that really leaves an impression. It’s light, it’s frothy and it’s oh-so inspirational. Although nothing new per se, there’s a refreshing factor to this show that is infectious and we love to see it.

  1. Well tried too watch it, i got like 10 mintes in before i changed to something else,

I want to choke the living shit out of some of the persons, yes i took it personally,

If this tv show is just about bullying IM FUCKING OUT, i want too punch that bully girl and the teacher in the fucking face,

Take a fucking chill pill, this feel uncomfortable to watch/hear.

Did we watch the same show??? A 4???

My score: 2.0 of 5 for now, god grif some people should burn in hell.

    • I think you should power through and watch it before making a definitive judgement 🙂 of course, you can choose not to as well! It’s just a TV show.

  2. Nope, my anger issues could not stand bully people like that, alot of fastfoward button here, dont tell me the whole tv show is like this????

  3. Does that girl need too fall flat on her face every darn minutes???? She need to check that out by a doctor right now.

  4. Uhhhh i hope its not gonna be about fashion the whole show, those people its not from planet earth,

If i take a brick and smashed it to the face, maybe some of them looked better,

And once again the girl manage to fall again, (its been a hot minutes since the last fall) and destroy the whole place, wow nooope im out before the bad luck from her is going over to me…

  5. All righty then, im managed to get to episode 7, and its good,

Awesome stuff and clothes so far,

I was hoping she like quite the school and doing foto models full time,

But no back to school it went AAAAAHHHHNOOO…wait aminute…why is everyone so nice….

And the bullies is now a nice person even after all that sh…ty they did to her???

I was expecting a bitt screaming and jealousy, (little revenge on the side), they are now just very creepy people….

Its one episode left, dont start the bully stuff again i dont want to go out and bite/kick in their kneecaps
in my angry state, (yes angry issues),

Im croosing my fingers and toes, please keep it cool,

    My score: 3.5 of 5….(for now)…..

  6. Aaahh thank you lord, all well and good, warching the episode 8, problems is now hopefully over…

Hoping for a movie comedie or few episodes more later on, where shes grown up with grown up problems (hint hint)…..

  7. Had a really good chipping day with my 58z grind again The greens were fast and the rough was thick yet time and time again I was able to get up and down

  8. Im now finish, its cool
But the one who put that geek paper on her back,

Burn her in a mettal fire oxe like in the roman times,

They could have a small scene at the end where she gets cought, the chinese women see everything, hear everything, and drag her ass out after her ears (both ears)…

Anyway too short, but its fine, now please make something similar…
