Demon City Review
The plot of the film follows former hitman Shûhei Sakata who tries to leave his organisation to pursue a family life, only to have his family killed in front of him. With a promise to get revenge, 12 years pass and he returns as a wounded soul. Soon, his path for revenge begins as he begins to take down every villain who destroyed his life, but a mysterious present awaits him on his quest.
I have to begin by talking about the wonderful action sequences that have filled the film wonderfully. Not only are these choreographies smooth and stunning, but they are also the highlight of the film. These scenes really uphold the expectations of an action lover as they captivate viewers with moves that are different from many others.
Meanwhile, the influence of Japanese culture that is shown throughout the film is another captivating aspect of this film. Local folk tales of demons hidden in the city, to the aesthetic view of traditions seen in the film, make up for a good and unique viewing experience for all. These scenes show the wonderful cinematography embedded in the film and lure us into the film all the more.
On the other hand, the blood and gore, another major part of the film, are brutal and honestly, these scenes are not for everyone. The brutality shown is realistic and makes one tremble while the main character goes around killing everyone in sight without much of a plan. Yes, Toma Ikuta is the highlight of this film, not just as the main character but also due to his wonderful performance.
He plays out his part with ease, making us see the many sides of his character in ways that will make you tremble. Be it the ruthless killer, a helpless man, a handicapped person, or a demon out for revenge. He shows us everything from madness to calm, and these parts only make me love his performance all the more.
Finally, when talking about the plot of the film, while it doesn’t stand out as something unique, it is just right to balance out the heaviness of the action and gore. This balance not only enhances the experience but also has you feeling just right by the end of the film.
Summing Up
Demon City is a fun, captivating and stunning action-packed film that gives us a run for our money. It not only brings about some of the best action sequences but merges it with some intriguing Japanese folk tales that only enhance the experience of the viewers. While the storyline doesn’t match the powerful action sequence, it is still worth the watch.
