April Fools’ Movies: Mischief, mind-games and funny pranks are what define April Fools, a day full of whimsy and laughter. And what better way to celebrate the spirit than with movies that pull the rug from under you? From shocking twists to elaborate cons and unreliable narrators, these films will pull a few pranks on you, leaving you scratching your head from start to finish!
April Fools’ Movies
The Prestige

Christopher Nolan sets his film in the Victorian era, following two rival magicians, Alfred and Robert, whose harmless rivalry at first turns into a bitter obsession to outdo each other and gain fame, with devastating consequences. The film feels less like a movie and more like a meticulous magic trick, mirroring its three acts – the pledge, the turn and the prestige. Constantly misdirecting and meandering, the film hides crucial details in plain sight until the final reveal hits with a clarity that leaves viewers completely distressed and shocked.
Viewers will find themselves running against time to figure out the truth before everything comes out in the open. Focusing on themes surrounding sacrifice, deception and the cost of brilliance, this one’s a must-watch (or rewatch) for anyone who likes something cerebral and intriguing.
Now You See Me

Taking a lighter detour, this film follows four illusionists who pull off several bank heists during their live performances and reward their audiences with the money. The film is an extremely entertaining watch that pits FBI agent Dylan on a wild chase to catch them in a flashy and fast-paced deception.
Now You See Me is a lighthearted and enjoyable romp that takes us on an extremely chaotic chase where the twists just keep on coming. There’s little realism here, focusing more on spectacle than anything else, but the charm is in its confident execution. It plays with perception constantly, making you question whether you are right or not and who is really in control. Its clever chaos is something that will make your April Fools’ Day binge worthwhile.
Fight Club

David Fincher’s creative film comes out of nowhere and leaves you heaving. An unnamed narrator’s mundane life changes drastically when he meets Tyler Durden, an anarchic madman who introduces him to an underground fight club that no one can talk about in the outside world. However, there’s more to it than meets the eye!
The film is a gritty exploration of consumerism and identity, and at first, it feels like just another drama. However, it morphs into something much more cerebral as the runtime moves on, and its insistence on misdirection is one of its best qualities. The unreliable narration and layered storytelling create a sense of unease as you watch with bated breath, wondering what’s going on. Well, that is until the now-iconic twist that destroys everything that you have seen till then!
It’s a film that stays with you long after it’s over, enduring the test of time thanks to its very pertinent themes of masculinity and searching for meaning in a hollow world.
Knives Out

A classic whodunit, this Rian Johnson film, featuring an ensemble cast, revolves around the suspicious death of a wealthy novelist and the chaos that ensues when eccentric detective Benoit Blanc arrives to get to the bottom of the slick crime.
The film is absolutely delightful, and it subverts the genre with ease. While you wonder who the murderer is, every small piece of information turns things on their heads, revealing new layers that make us start from scratch. The fantastic performances add to the fun as, while each character has their secret to hide, the performances add something fun and playful to it to make it all the more watchable. It’s witty, sharp and perfect for an unpredictable April Fools’ Day watch.
Inception

This Christopher Nolan film is famous for turning things on its head over and over again. Following a man with dream-stealing abilities, who is tasked to plant an idea in a CEO’s head, things turn disastrous when his tragic past makes everything perilous for himself and his team.
Inception takes the idea of deception and takes it to a whole other level. The layered narrative of showcasing dreams within dreams within dreams and so on creates a puzzle that is so complex that it changes your perception of reality in the most interesting ways. Each level, with its own rules and timeframes, is nothing short of surreal, making the missions immediate and extreme. Of course, if you’re thinking that you will get a straight answer by the end, you’re mistaken. The ambiguous ending is the biggest April Fools’ prank that has haunted viewers for decades.
