Alchemy of Souls Episode 16 Recap and Review: Promises, Secrets and Reunions

Alchemy of Souls (환혼) is a 2022 Korean fantasy drama which is set in the imaginary world of Daeho. The story revolves around young magicians who are to carry the burden of the past. Starring Lee Jae-wook, Jung So-min and Hwang Min-hyun, the show premiered on tvN on Jun 18, 2022. The show will have 20 episodes and it takes over tvN’s Saturday-Sunday 9 PM KST timeslot previously occupied by Our Blues. Alchemy of Souls episode 16 has a runtime of 68 minutes.

Netflix describes the series as:

Alchemy of Souls episode 16 starts off with Jang Uk telling Mu-deok to behave like she is madly in love with him. She asks him what will happen after that and tells him that she needs to be certain that he belongs to her if she has to pretend to love him. He is left speechless when he remembers the matter with the Gwiigu and tells her that master Lee has always known about her being a soul shifter.

Inside the training centre, Jin Ho-kyung demand Songrim hand over the Gwigu and calls master Lee a thief. However, the Gwigu senses sorcery from Jin Cho-yeon because of the bloodworm and goes to attack her. But, Jin Ho-kyung saves her by killing the Gwigu. Everyone then turns to Jin Cho-yeon who says that it must be because of the love charm that she has.

Jin Ho-kyung is angered and goes to hit her when Park Dong-gu saves her and everyone realises that they are lovers. In the secret room, Jang Uk and Mu-deok arrive to see Gwigu’s body and when the latter tries to touch it, Seo Yul stops her as it may still harm her.

Elsewhere, Jin Ho-kyung takes back her blame as she was the one who killed Gwigu. After this, Heo Yeom tries to get Park Jin and Jin Ho-kyung to make up because of the relationship between Jin Ch-yeon and Park Dong-gu. However, Jin Ho-kyung does not accept the two because she has plans to get her daughter married to the crown prince.

Park Jin also doesn’t want the two together, but when they try to separate Jin Cho-yeon and Park Dong-gu, the two rebel. The two are thrown out and they later find shelter at the Jang Household.

In the palace, Jin Mu informs the king about the death of the Gwigu and instils fear of the one with the King’s Star. He tries to instigate enmity between the royal family and Songrim. Elsewhere, master Lee tells Park Jin that the queen is with Jin Mu while the latter hopes for Jang Kang’s return.

We then see a mysterious man walking along the streets of Daeho and it turns out to be none other than Jang Kang. Back in Songrim, Heo Yeom hands over Naksu’s sword to Jang Uk along with a message from master Lee who warns him to never let Mu-deok draw the sword.

Jang Uk hands over the sword to Mu-deok and asks her to promise that when she regains her powers then the person she stabs should be him because he released the assassin Naksu. Elsewhere, Park Jin gets to know that Kim Do-ju has given shelter to Park Dong-gu and Jin Cho-yeon. She tells him to be more open-minded which makes Park Jin ask if she would be okay if Jang Uk were to fall in love with someone he should not.

She tells him that she would be fine no matter her age or her looks, and he asks if Kim Do-ju herself would fall in love with someone regardless of these things. She thinks he is confessing to her while Park Jin is saddened as he thinks she is speaking of master Lee.

In the Jang Household, Park Dong-gu and Jin Cho-yeon are already regretting their decision but are unable to do anything because they don’t want to hurt each other. Jin Cho-yeon confesses to Mu-deok that she is being irritable because she is anxious. They then start talking about Jin Bu-yeon and Jin Cho-yeon hopes that her sister returns.

Elsewhere, Park Dong-gu, Jang Uk and Seo Yul reminisce about the days of their childhood when they witnessed Seo Yul get sick when he couldn’t endure the fact that they had lied. Later Jang Uk realises that Seo Yul knows about Mu-deok and has been enduring this secret for a long time. He apologises to the sleeping Seo Yul for not noticing this earlier.

In the palace, the crown prince is suspicious of the queen as Eunuch Kim has disappeared. Jang Uk on the other hand is trying to find out more about shaman Choi. In Songrim, Park Jin is also suspicious of the queen and concludes that she is a soul shifter who has moved the queen’s soul into some other body. This is because the Seo family members have a Lantern of Life which goes off only when the member dies.

The queen knows of Songrim’s suspicion and has planned to soon occupy So Yi’s body while the queen will be announced dead. The search for information about the shaman takes Jang Uk to Gaema village where he runs into the crown prince. The latter tells him that his search for Eunuch Kim brought him here and Jang Uk reveals that he is looking for shaman Choi. The two go together under the gaze of Jang Kang who is hiding.

In the Jang household, Kim Do-ju helps the two to get over their regrets and asks Mu-deok to set up a table for them. The two decide to get their stuff from their house and Mu-deok is asked to go with Jin Cho-yeon. Later, Jin Cho-yeon hurries to look for something when she pushes Mu-deok but soon comes to apologise to her and sees the scar that reminds her of Jin Bu-yeon.

In Cheonbugwan, Soo Yi shows her scar to Jin Woo-tak who finds it alright. He then leaves behind a handkerchief which has the crest of the Jin family, making So Yi wonder why Mu-deok has a blindfold with the same crest.

Alchemy of Souls Episode 16 Ending

Back in Gaema village, Jang Uk and the crown prince meet a shaman who knows about shaman Choi. He tells them that he was well versed in sorcery and was caught by Cheonbugwan’s mages. However, she jumped into the fire and people think that she has perished. He also tells them that she had a brother who married into a high-class family.

In Songrim, Park Dang-gu tells Park Jin that he cannot leave Jin Cho-yeon. Park Jin tells him to go back to the Jang household, however, he hands him a picture of Jang Kang and asks to be informed if he sees him. At the Jin household, Jin Mu gets So Yi to meet Jin Ho-kyung while Mu-deok and Jin Cho-yeon hide to sneak out after getting her stuff.

However, they secretly follow the group to Jinyowon’s door to see if So Yi can open the doors. There, the doors sense Mu-deok’s presence and open but everything thinks that it was done by So Yi. In Gaema village the two notice that someone is following them and decide to spilt to check who is being followed. Jang Uk soon gets to know that it is him and comes face to face with the man who is none other than Jang Kang.

Alchemy of Souls Episode 16 Review

Today’s episode was intense and there can be no better definition of it. From more talks about life and death between Jang Uk and Mu-deok to the mysteries that are hidden deep inside. This show keeps getting better and we are loving every moment of it.

Jang Kang is finally back in Daeho, but why does he seem more miserable than anyone else? What has he witnessed that has made him like this? Will Park Jin’s hope for him end up in disappointment?

Jang Uk is one of the best observers in this show and this talent of his can cause him pain. But he is also a caring person who is always there for his friends. He is aware of Seo Yul’s predicament and whom it is connected, but all he feels is sorry for not noticing it earlier. But the same goes for Seo Yul who is suffering in silence to protect his loved ones.

Also, it looks like Cheonbugwan is planning something big and So Yi is going to be their target soon. While I know that she is only trying to survive, it is still hard to accept it. But I also find her pitiful because I’m pretty sure that shaman Choi is going to soul shift into her body.

But, to think that shaman Choi’s brother is none other than Jin Woo-tak! Now it is clear why he has been helping out with Cheonbugwan’s plans. This pair of siblings is poisonous and the chaos they are going to cause will be something to look forward to.

Lastly, the reunion of parents with their children! While we have been looking forward to this for a long time, it is just not going as expected. Jang Kang has a sword pointed at his neck by his son while Jin Ho-kyung has got the wrong child. I really wanted to screen ”Why?!” when Mu-deok appeared right behind the group.

Anyways, with the show going on hiatus next weekend, it will take longer for us to get the new episodes. But with there being a special broadcast next weekend, there may be something exciting to look forward to.
