Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Soo-jung is an Egoistic Doctor and We Love It!

Doctor X episode 3 will definitely crawl under your skin, as it has so many infuriating scenes. It clearly shows how many hospitals are purely run for profit and how medical expertise has become a joke. With Soo-jung as one of the few doctors who care about lives, we see her take a stand when her colleagues try to establish hierarchy and assert power. She doesn’t care about seniority or her colleagues’ jealousy.

Doctor X: Mafia in White episode 3 runtime is approx. 60 minutes. The series (닥터X: 하얀 마피아의 시대) stars Kim Ji-won, Lee Jung-eun, Son Hyun-joo, Kim Woo-seok and Lee Jin-hee in the main roles. It is directed by Lee Jung-rim.

Doctor X Episode 3: Botherless Queen Behaviour

Authority Over Empathy

Discussion around Soo-jung’s surgery really made me feel bad. Instead of focusing on the patient and actually understanding how efficient Soo-jung would be in saving their life, the so-called senior doctors question her authority. They’re so ashamed of their reputation becoming tarnished just because Soo-jung often speaks informally. Uhm, is that even a necessity now when a patient is in dire need?

The neurosurgeons especially got on my nerves because all they want is to see Soo-jung suffer, even if it means the patient will die. Their professional disagreement is off limits, as they all lack basic empathy. The series clearly makes us see how, in institutions, more than ethics and values, hierarchy is worshipped and often respected.

Confidence Backed by Competence

Kim Ji-won continues to command the screen as Kye Soo-jung. She really portrays the strength of Soo-jung, which is confidence and the ability to refuse the seniors’ stupidity. Instead of wasting her time on debates, she focuses on saving the patients’ lives. She enters the operating room, literally tells them that she won’t fail, and proceeds with the surgery.

Soo-jung succeeds in her surgery and proves that not only are her surgical abilities great but also her humanity. We also learn that she has a neurosurgical certification, meaning her qualifications are top tier.

Seong-gyu and the Doctors Who Lost Their Way

Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Lee Sung-wook
Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Lee Sung-wook

So what happened to the senior doctors who once used to be young and full of life? Let’s talk about Seong-gyu especially. We see that Seong-gyu came into this profession with so much life and enthusiasm, just like how Tae-gyeong is rolling about. However, as he had to face so much pressure, politics and other nonsense within the hospital corporation, his compassion has been replaced with cynicism.

This doesn’t mean we should forgive his behaviour now, but we need to analyse it to ensure that such a thing won’t happen to the present young minds. We also see Dr Bae revealing some traces of humanity that they still have within themselves. These moments show that all the arrogant doctors were once life-changing heroes who decided to become selfish as the system around them forced them with hardships.

Dr Boo and the Danger of Becoming the Villain

Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Son Hyun-joo
Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Son Hyun-joo

I love Son Hyun-joo, and seeing him as Dr Boo makes the series intriguing. His true identity has still not been revealed. Is he a villain or a saint? We don’t know because his character sketch seems to be of a person who has calculated expressions and a smile so unsettling. It makes one find it hard to understand whether Dr Boo is manipulating a problem or is genuinely trying to make the hospital lively again.

His character walks an interesting line between strategist and potential antagonist. I hope the director doesn’t randomly turn him into a villain because that would make the series too familiar and boring. For now, the curiosity drives us, and that’s why Dr Boo seems intriguing.

Final Verdict

Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Kim Ji-won
Doctor X Episode 3 Review: Kim Ji-won

Episode 3 shows us a hospital that runs on profit and not on professionalism. This is highly relatable, as we all know that most hospitals focus more on the money and status of the patients than on the real life of a human being who wants to live. Morals and ethics are what drive a person, but clearly only a few in this series have them.

Soo-jung’s presence threatens the hospital because she exposes the gap between what the doctors preach and what they actually do. Whether she can change that culture remains uncertain, but the conflict is becoming increasingly compelling.

Ultimately, Doctor X: Mafia in White delivers a powerful reminder: a true doctor saves lives, not their reputation.
