The Last House Ending Explained: This Netflix thriller takes us back to COVID times but with a twist, highlighting the cabin fever and insanity that comes with being trapped in the house for too long. Add to that otherworldly creatures, and things get a bit out of hand too fast. The Netflix film brings back those horrifying months to our screens, putting a young family in the line of fire as, along with creatures in the rain, they have to fight starvation to top it off.
The premise feels straightforward at first, but there’s more to the story as it slowly transforms into a psychological mystery that asks questions surrounding fear, trust and what people become when survival is their only priority. While the film starts off confusing, keeping things intentionally vague, it eventually gets dark and confusing, bringing an uncertainty that both the protagonists and the viewers feel. Do the family and humanity ever escape the confines of their home?
The sci-fi thriller film, with a runtime of 110 minutes, is directed by Louis Leterrier and stars Greta Lee, Wagner Moura, Gabriel Barbosa, Emma Ho, Riley Chung, and Noah Alexander Sosnowski.
The Last House Review
The Last House isn’t explicitly interested in exploring who the invaders are, but rather explores the psychological toll that it takes on people when they are forced to stay indoors against their will. Much like COVID times, the film highlights how these desperate situations can break or make a family, but obviously heightened for movie magic. The grounded performances from across the board make this more enjoyable and heighten the experience more.
The greatest strength of the film lies in its ambiguity. Although we do see who or what might be behind the situation, the film keeps the focus on the core family and their emotions across years of living in isolation. How humans adapt to extreme situations is a very engaging watch and pushes the film forward.
However, where the film loses itself is when it showcases the threat as something more than psychological. While the creature design is great, the film would’ve benefited from not showing the threat directly. Its insistence on not telling us anything might also rub some people the wrong way because it can get a bit confusing. The payoff can feel less satisfying than the gripping setup

Why Couldn’t the Family Leave the House?
Throughout the film, we see Riley, Jason and their children trying every possible way to leave the house. While they try to break open the doors and windows at first, they eventually realise that there’s something in the rain outside that is keeping the doors locked and keeping them inside. Every attempt to escape and find help ends in the same way – an invisible barrier that doesn’t let them leave. We eventually learn that these might be aliens of some sort who have some hidden agenda, and the film intentionally keeps a lot ambiguous.
The Last House tries to focus more on the family at hand, how they overcome the obstacle that they face and find a way to survive till the end. The unseen danger is only the tip of the iceberg, as the family’s greatest enemy turns out to be diminishing supplies, their home gradually getting destroyed by the incessant rain and their dwindling trust in one another. Their eroding mental state is another cause for concern, as cabin fever slowly takes over the family.
What Happens in the Ending?
Towards the end, the family gradually realise that they cannot stay inside and simply survive anymore – they have to live. As their house sinks, the enemy starts to come into the home, and they have no clue but to fight back. In the end, after a lengthy fight with the monster, Jason has a surprise change of heart and shows grace to the monster who tries to kill them. This eventually works in their favour as, seeing their kindness, the monster, too, lets them leave and makes the others leave as well. The change happens suddenly and drastically, and only because they might have been the only family to have shown mercy.
In the end, the family doesn’t let fear and isolation destroy them, but rather, they work together to find a way out of the situation. They show kindness and empathy when it’s impossible to find, and that’s what eventually frees them from their prison.
Was the Threat Ever Explained?
We eventually see that the threat is actually some alien creature that is made of salt water. The film doesn’t get too deep into the lore and why they came to Earth. It’s much like any other disaster film that comes out of nowhere, only this time, it’s aliens. However, we never know why they came to Earth or why they kept humans hostage. Plus, why they decided to attack the humans in turn as well.
The Deeper Meaning Behind the Last House
The Last House is more about humans persevering in the most impossible situations while keeping their sanity intact than it’s about some external threat. While the rain and the mystery are intriguing, the film wants to showcase emotional endurance.
While their home becomes their prison, it’s also a sign of safety and comfort. As resources disappear, every member reacts differently, but, in the end, they come together to find a solution and survive impossible odds. The movie wonders what happens if we are never able to escape our confinement and paints a scary yet hopeful picture.

I hate watched the entire movie. None of the actors had chemistry which made it hard to be sympathetic or concerned for them. The typical and overused trope of a child disobeying the parent and endangering everyone, no surprise. Unlike The Quite Place, I wasn’t on the edge of my seat. I rolled my eyes more than anything. I honestly hoped the creatures just offed the family and went on to show the new world without human. lol
This movie was absolutely terrible in the end, I loved it the first 20 minutes and then it all went down hill. Also please explain to me how 7 years later the gas in the car is still good. Come on man.

Nothing really happens and it’s about family things, THAT I HATE THE MIST IN THE WHOLE WORLD…
There must be hundreds or thousands of people outside that live on the street or just night roamers, this movie make no Sense, military and cops out at night, and the dog scene with the gun shot, well someone need shoot in the back for making this so called movie….0,5 stars…..not worth the watch it unless you need to sleep 😴 💤
