Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Overview
The anime adaptation of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was first announced in September 2022 and later confirmed as a television series produced by Madhouse. The first season was directed by Keiichirō Saitō, with series composition by Tomohiro Suzuki and character designs by Reiko Nagasawa.

In September 2024, the anime was officially renewed for a second season, which began airing on January 16, 2026. While most of the main staff and cast returned, the new season saw Tomoya Kitagawa take over as director, alongside an updated character design team. Additionally, the franchise expanded through a set of short spin-off episodes released digitally on YouTube and social media platforms. It happened between October 2023 and March 2024.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 Episode 1 Review

The episode begins with Frieren continuing her journey with her two travel partners, Stark and Fern, expecting a new adventure ahead. Though they have their journey mapped out, they soon realised that they need to take on better-paying work because they are running short on money. Currently, they are in the Saume Marshes, and here they find a mysterious stone that essentially erases all magic. It is worth a lot of money, but it also handicaps mages like Frieren, making the situation pretty grave for them.

In such a scenario, if a demon attacks them out of nowhere, they will have nothing other than physical prowess to save themselves, which is pretty dangerous in the world of Frieren, where magical beings exist. Frieren’s party also lands itself in a precarious situation, and Stark becomes the only person who could save the day if things go south. And it did indeed go south, which again triggers a beloved memory within Frieren that gives us another glimpse of her days with Himmel. It is apparent that the time she spent with Himmel, Eisen, and Heiter was one of the most precious memories to her.

Thus, whenever she experiences a fun or exciting situation, she always remembers the fond memories she had with Himmel and others. The second half is definitely my favourite part of this episode, precisely because it is a win for Stark and Fern shippers. The way this show beautifully portrays Stark’s bond with Fern is on a different level, and it is something that can not be competed with. I am more than mesmerised by how sadly we get romantic elements without this anime actually being about romance.

This episode again solidified just how brilliant an anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is. From the animation to its storytelling, not once does this series miss in any way or form, and that becomes very apparent from the very first episode of this season. Madhouse obviously delivered phenomenally with a beautiful animation and sound design. But the way the story makes the audience feel things and get transported into the magical world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is astounding.

Verdict
I am absolutely in awe of the beauty of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and I’m glad that in this season, we’re getting so many good anime back-to-back. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End kicks off 2026 on an incredibly strong note, and every fan should obviously watch this masterpiece right away.
