The Night Manager Season 1 Recap

In the first season, Jonathan Pine, an ex-British soldier and current night manager at a luxury hotel, finds his quiet life upended when he starts a relationship with a guest’s mistress, who hands him documents exposing an international arms deal involving Richard Roper that ends in her getting murdered. Years later, MI6 agent Angel Burr approaches him to infiltrate Roper’s network and stages a scenario wherein he saves Roper’s son.

This provides him with an easy in, after which he immediately becomes a part of the inner circle and becomes involved with Roper’s girlfriend, Jemima. When Roper plans a huge arms deal, Pine tries to stop it and bring the information to Burr, only for her to be betrayed by those around her. Still, he pushes on and eventually exposes Roper, who is arrested, but doesn’t quite face the consequences of his actions.

Much-loved British espionage series The Night Manager returns 10 years later with another season of suave but reluctant spy Jonathan Pine retracing the steps of his past life with a new mission involving those he had thought he left behind. Regardless of my apprehensions surrounding the second season, there’s something extremely charming and attractive about this series that one can’t help but be roped into.

The season follows Pine’s dive right back into old habits, but there’s something different this time that will make fans of the series a bit confused. The best part of the series, as always, is the fantastic Tom Hiddleston, whose charm is what pushes this series forward better than you’d expect. It’s arresting to watch him slowly unravel a tough mystery full of shocking twists and turns that get somewhat better the more you keep watching the series.

I think this is an enjoyable second season that connects the first season quite well, and it’s one of the better espionage thrillers that we have come across over the years. The second season rolls out its twists steadily and mostly pays back for all the patience that we need to have to watch the story unfold. Plus, the fantastic performances from across the board help viewers be hooked to the story and don’t let us look away from the screen.

That being said, this is as generic as it comes. I think the first season worked so well because it was a one-of-a-kind affair that didn’t promise a continuation, making us cherish the experience over unnecessary gimmicks. However, in the midst of a deluge of similar shows, this one somehow feels repetitive and obvious, with points taken from different shows that we have come to watch over the years.

It’s an enjoyable watch, but one that works mostly because of its execution rather than its storyline. Viewers will find themselves on edge thanks to Hiddleston, Chahidi and Morrone, but it’s clearly inspired by James Bond in more ways than one, and that will weigh heavily in this season’s tone. I found myself shocked in some points, but otherwise, it’s pretty run-of-the-mill and doesn’t add anything to the genre beyond that.

In the end, without a butt in sight, The Night Manager Season 2 is a decent watch for fans of the show. It’s nothing shocking or memorable, but it’s definitely engaging and the performances and storytelling more than make up for some of its downsides. If nothing, I am here to watch Hiddleston… for better or for worse.
