Stephen Ending Explained

The film opens with Stephen taking auditions of several women and eventually murdering them during the process. Standing at 9 killings, he is being sought by the police, but before they can get to him, he surrenders in a surprising twist. The court orders him to be checked by a psychiatrist, and after conducting some tests on him, Seema concludes that he’s a pathological liar and that it’s difficult to nail down his motivations.

Police officer Michael and Seema decide to get to the bottom of his past and eventually learn from different clues that his parents were abusive and that he had a lover, Krithika, whom he also murdered.

Was Stephen really mentally disturbed?

Well, yes, but not in the way one would expect. Stephen wasn’t suffering from a mental health episode due to his parents’ abuse growing up, as he had told everyone. He was always mentally disturbed and had killed his parents when they became problematic for him. He was the one who orchestrated all the bad things and took advantage of his parents, and killed their puppy in childhood. Neither of his parents was abusive; in fact, his father doted on him and his mother, although strict, also loved him.

So why did Stephen commit these murders?

Simply put… because he wanted to. Being mentally unstable, he always had murderous tendencies from the start, starting with killing small animals. However, when that didn’t satisfy him, he killed his parents, which resulted in him killing Krithika and then the other women. There is no reason behind his actions – he simply wanted to murder people.

Does Stephen face justice?

Stephen is second to two consecutive life sentences instead of being put on death row because of the lies that he fed to Seema. He, however, is sure that he will be able to get out of jail in 10 years on good behaviour, revealing that he had planned all of this in detail from the very beginning.

Who is the person shown in the end?

Although we don’t see their face, it’s clear that he is Stephen’s accomplice who got rid of the women’s bodies. Throughout the film, it is alluded that Stephen was not working alone and there was someone who helped him with so many women’s bodies from piling up. That is confirmed in the end.
