Letters From the Past Ending Explained
The season opens with Elif finding out from her mother’s old things that she is not Fatma’s own child, and she was adopted by her. The problem with this revelation is that her mother has Alzheimer’s and is extremely unwell these days. With her mother unable to reveal the truth, Elif goes on a journey to know more about Fatma and the truth about her parents.
We are taken back to 2003, when Fatma was a teacher at a local middle school. The series starts on the day she gave out the instructions to her students to write “Letters to the Future” to themselves. The Literature Club is ecstatic and giddy about the idea. In the present, Elif learns that Fatma had lost a husband and possibly a son to an earthquake – a detail she had no idea about. Meanwhile, all of Fatma’s students get together at the school for a reunion, and old feelings start to come to the surface slowly.

As the story progresses, we sort of figure out that Seda might have been pregnant around the time Elif was born, so she decides to meet her first and foremost. However, that doesn’t pan out, although we do eventually learn that Seda was in a relationship with Turan, a fact that his now wife and Seda’s sister, Pelin, had no idea about. The letter leaves the family devastated.
She later finds a faint writing on the scan with Seda’s name written on it, but learns that Seda died 20 years ago. She tries to deliver the letters while solving this mystery that seems to get more and more complicated.
What’s the secret in the Lit Club batch?

The truth comes trickling out as the runtime moves towards the end, and Levente, whom everyone had thought was having an affair with Zuhal, is actually her older brother. Zuhal was embarrassed about her family life and lied about her relationship with him. Meanwhile, Mert is beaten up by Levente when he heckles Zuhal, leaving his leg badly injured, due to which he walks with a limp to this day. Murat, who was in love with Zuhal, realised that his father would not leave him an inheritance, which changed the trajectory of his life completely.
Meanwhile, Banu was in love with Mert, but he loved Seda, who died of an overdose thanks to the drugs that Levente supplied to her. Zuhal reported Levente to the school authorities, after which he was arrested and sent to jail.
Who are Elif’s parents?
In Letters From the Past episode 6, Zuhal herself comes up to Elif and tells her that she is her mother. She then fabricates tales about how loving her home was growing up, but she had to give up Elif because her father didn’t want to keep her. It’s a lie, and later, Zuhal reads Banu’s letter to herself and realises that the handwriting matches in both that letter and the letter that Elif’s mother wrote to her. She, however, keeps that knowledge to herself and tells Banu and Murat that Elif is actually his daughter.

Banu, of course, doesn’t take this well and reveals that Elif is her and Murat’s daughter. Murat, of course, is left shocked and incensed, and Zuhal charges her, asking her whether she has ever wanted to be a mother. Elsewhere, Rahat confesses to Elif that Banu is her real birth mother.
What happens in the end?
Elif talks to Zuhal and Banu together, and Zuhal, realising that Elif knows the truth, tries to spill the beans. But, Elif tells them both that she already has a mother, Fatma, and even though someone else gave birth to her, the truth doesn’t change.
At the end of the journey, Mert and Banu start a relationship, Murat decides to take his relationship with his son seriously, Zuhal deactivates her account, and Elif is seen enjoying her newfound life where she knows who she exactly is.

I really enjoyed the series but thought the ending was very weak.
