Newtopia Ending Explained
The season starts with Young-joo and Jae-yoon going through a breakup. With Jae-yoon’s military enlistment, he has become a little too clingy, calling her at odd times and getting a bit too possessive. Stressed with her job, Young-joo decides to break things off instead of living separately for 2 years, leaving Jae-yoong heartbroken. However, after thinking back to their relationship along with her mother’s encouragement, she decides to visit his base on the top floor of a big hotel and make up with him.
On the way, however, she faces a zombie outbreak that forces her and her friends to go into hiding. At the base, Jae-yoon and his team are shocked as one by one the soldiers turn into monsters and after help fails to arrive courtesy of a zombie-ridden helicopter, they decide to fight their way out instead of slowly dying on the terrace.

Most of the episodes are spent with Jae-yoon and Young-joo’s respective teams fighting zombies and trying their best to reach Eden Hotel, losing more and more people in the process. It’s a heartbreaking situation for everyone, especially Young-joo, who, after losing Jin-wook in a terrible stampede inside the railway tunnel, has to fight off zombies alone. Along the way, she meets many different people who help her get to safety while Jae-yoon’s team remains mostly together. They are helped by Arron Park, the enigmatic manager of the hotel, who, in spite of being bitten, has not turned into a zombie.
Why Do Some People Turn Into Zombies and Some Don’t?

Although the characters mention that alcohol is the reason that some people are turning into zombies and some aren’t, I think it mostly depends on where they are bitten. While Kim Young-man turns soon after being bitten, Arron Park takes more time because the former was bitten on the wrist and the latter on the leg. If we remember, even Samsoo took quite some time to turn into a zombie and in spite of the alcohol, he turned as well. The closer the people are bitten to the brain, the quicker they will turn.
What Does the Last Scene Signify in Newtopia Episode 8?

In the Newtopia finale, we see the remaining gang look over the horizon at the Han River and a huge explosion rocking the city. It signifies that the fight is not over and although the military and government want survivors to head to Jeju instead of Suseo, things might just turn bloody there as well. The series highlights that after the events of the series, our gang has become quite proficient and tight-knit when it comes to killing the undead and is up for any challenge thrown their way.
What did Young-joo See in the Tunnels?
In the last episode, after saving herself from a gang of bloodthirsty men who are out to murder anyone on their path and a hoard of zombies who eventually kill those men, Young-joo is saved by a woman who works at the bus terminal. She takes him to a safe spot and after she talks to her mother, they spend some time hiding in the room before making a plan to head out.
The woman asks her to stay put while she goes out to open the shutters and when Jae-yoon and his team arrive to get Young-joo out, she implores them to wait for her. However, In-ho pulls Jae-yoon aside and shows her the headless body of the woman that Young-joo is talking about, telling him that considering the decomposition, the woman has been dead for a long time.

After the harrowing experience that she has faced, it is quite possible that Young-joo made her up in order to get some sort of comfort within the cold and lonely tunnels. She’s also probably suffering from a stress disorder, which would be unsurprising considering her surroundings and how much she had to struggle alone. In the end, In-ho and Jae-yoon don’t burst her bubble and instead assure her that her friend has gotten out of the tunnels safely so as not to hurt her further.
