TThe Sabarmati Report is reportedly one of India’s most contested historical moments, and the film was finally released in theatres on November 15, 2024. Ranjan Chandel directed it and was completed by Dheeraj Sarna. Based on the 2002 Godhra train burning case, the film stars Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Riddhi Dogra. The Sabarmati Report review on X, among criticisms, have mixed reactions.
Written by Avinash and Arjun, the film goes rather deep about what happened in the aftermath of the disaster, at the cost of breaking down political and media narratives around it. It is performances that make the movie punchy, yet not every viewer finds the narrative convincing. Toggling from gripping moments to slowed-down sequences, the audience seems divided on whether the film is a cinematic triumph or a missed opportunity.
If there’s one thing that everyone agrees on, it is the strength of the performances. Vikrant Massey leads the cast with an emotionally resonant portrayal, following his recent success in 12th Fail. As one user noted: “#VikrantMassey is brilliant. After 12th Fail, he has passed with A grade in this report.” Raashii Khanna also shines in her role as a trainee journalist, delivering one of her finest performances to date. Meanwhile, Riddhi Dogra’s character of an experienced journalist in newsroom drew eerie similarity with the real journalistic world, making one viewer comment: “In our newsrooms, we all know a Riddhi. She nailed it!
Execution Not Up to the Mark. Though the cast gets unanimous applauds, the same cannot be said about the execution of the film. Several viewers pointed out the uneven pacing, especially in the second half, which kills the momentum building up in the first.
Just how shallow the drama could be was also reflected by one viewer’s lament: “#TheSabarmatiReport is a WEAK film with STRONG performances. The story was unchallenging at times, and some scenes were over-simplified.” Songs and moments of lighter relief felt forced upon many, as another review was quicker to state: “The film had potential, but the cringe-worthy dialogues and unnecessary songs ruined it.”
With the political undertones amid this sensitive subject, the attention drawn was indispensable. While some did praise the guts with which it told uncomfortable truths, others felt that it was a one-sided document and resembled something like a propaganda file. Despite its shortcomings, The Sabarmati Report has been felt worth discussion on one of India’s most crucial moments. “Few films can take up the truth like this,” said one viewer.
This is indeed a cinematic wake-up call, but the execution could have been much better.
