Raat Jawaan Hai Review

Sumeet Vyas’s Raat Jawaan Hai has a very distinct Permanent Roommates feel to it… but with more babies. Struggling (and enjoying) with the ups and downs of raising children and trying to make time for themselves in the process, the series is a relatable and funny watch one that reminds us that it’s okay to love the process but be a little annoyed with it as well. The series will make viewers emotional thanks to its realistic life situations and the actors do a phenomenal job of bringing that rawness to the screen, making this a heartfelt watch.

Touching on the various relationships and hardships of adulthood, there’s something really interesting about the way these life experiences are shared that hits right at home. From stumbling around trying to figure out how much screen time is allowed for their children to learning from the lived experiences of their parents, the series is warm and fuzzy, and even the mistakes that the characters make prove that they are human. The series doesn’t paint them as martyrs or villains, but rather as normal people learning and evolving while trying to juggle their various responsibilities.

Their relationships with their spouses, although small, play a big part in fleshing the three characters out. Learning to let go and trust their spouses as equal parents is interesting and heartwarming, considering Radhika, Avinash and Suman are stay-at-home parents. The dichotomy of learning to let go while also learning when to prioritise their home lives is a struggle most parents face and the way it’s shown in the series is empathetic and makes you look at these characters in a softer way. Of course, it also helps that all of these characters are privileged & well-off and can choose not to work because of their more successful spouses but the creators clearly wanted this to be a lighter show where the bigger problems are inherently taken care of.

The comedy in the series isn’t overdone and neither is it very cerebral. Personally, I think it perfectly represents the goofiness and silliness of the three’s friendship and is quite approachable and relatable. It’s stuff that people have probably said with their own friends but it’s the timing that lands really well. Plus, it helps that all three of the actors, Barun Sobti, Anjali Anand and Priya Bapat, are really good and feel like they are truly friends. The small stories from their younger years flesh them out well, making viewers want to watch this journey of their lives even more.

However, the most interesting part of Raat Jawaan Hai is the relationship between Radhika, Avinash and Suman. Friends since childhood, we see their bonds but also how these bonds came to be in snippets throughout the runtime. It’s sweet to see them caring and being there for each other during the big and small moments, proving that regardless of the hurdles, some friendships are meant to last. Navigating through the complications of having children, one thing that is constant in their lives is their love for one another and it’s heartening to see how supporting friendships can be such a positive driving force in our lives.

Privileged but still realistic, Raat Jawaan Hai is warm and fuzzy, showcasing the realities of parenting (of course, for rich people). The series is a light and easy-going watch that is entertaining and funny, showcasing the realities of taking care of children and evolving as people.
