Borderless Fog Review

The film centres on Sanja, a detective from Jakarta who is dispatched to investigate a series of grisly murders affecting the Indonesian Daya community in the border region between Indonesia and Malaysia on Borneo Kalimantan. As Sanja delves deeper into the case, she is compelled to confront ghosts from her past and navigate her own personal demons.

One of the film’s brighter spots is Putri Marino’s performance as Sanja. Marino manages to bring a sense of authenticity to her role as the tough yet vulnerable detective. She effectively portrays a character who is not only grappling with a complex case but also dealing with her own murky past. Marino’s depiction of Sanja is compelling, with her portrayal of the character’s vulnerabilities and intuitions standing out, especially when she sports her signature cool sunglasses.

However, while Marino’s performance is commendable, it isn’t enough to salvage the film’s broader issues. The film’s narrative and execution leave much to be desired. The mystery and suspense are poorly structured, with a narrative that feels disjointed and dialogues that come across as clunky and awkward. There is potential for a gripping crime drama, but the script fails to weave the various elements effectively, leading to a film that feels scattered and unfocused.

One notable area where the film misses the mark is in its depiction of the dynamic between Sanja and Pancha, played by Luke Mansardi. The potential for tension between a corrupt cop and an honest cop is present but remains underexplored. Instead of delving into this intriguing conflict, the film shifts focus to other characters, such as Thomas and Bujang, whose interactions feel superficial and lack depth. The missed opportunity to explore the friction between Sanja and Pancha is a significant drawback, as it could have added layers of complexity to the narrative.

On a positive note, the film maintains a dark and gloomy tone that suits the genre. The atmosphere created is fitting for a crime drama, and the depiction of the cultural and political tensions between Malaysian and Indonesian authorities adds a layer of authenticity to the setting. The film effectively incorporates regional settings, contributing to the ominous and eerie vibe that is essential for this type of storytelling.

The cinematography in Borderless Fog demonstrates some effort to evoke the style of classic thrillers. The film employs a range of visual techniques to enhance the suspense, including wide-angle shots and atmospheric lighting. However, these efforts are often undermined by technical issues such as choppy editing and puzzling cutaways. While the cinematography has its moments, the inconsistent execution detracts from the film’s overall cinematic value. The wide-angle shots, intended to heighten tension, often come across as distracting rather than immersive.

In terms of production value, Borderless Fog clearly attempts to create an engaging and atmospheric crime drama. The film’s commitment to capturing the regional setting and exploring the cultural nuances is commendable. Yet, these positive aspects are overshadowed by the script’s failure to effectively integrate its elements. The film’s narrative struggles to maintain a coherent and compelling story, resulting in a viewing experience that feels fragmented and unsatisfying.

Final Thoughts

Borderless Fog is a film with notable strengths, particularly in its lead performance and atmospheric setting. Putri Marino’s portrayal of Sanja adds depth to the character, and the film’s depiction of regional tensions and settings contributes to its dark and moody atmosphere. However, the film’s overall execution is hampered by a disjointed narrative, clunky dialogue, and technical issues in cinematography and editing. Despite its potential, Borderless Fog ultimately fails to deliver a cohesive and engaging crime drama. For fans of the genre, the film may offer some interesting elements, but it falls short of providing a fully satisfying experience.

The Indonesian film Borderless Fog is now streaming on Netflix.
