Villainess Level 99 Episode 4 Review: The Hidden Boss Attends Field Lessons

Villainess Level 99 Episode 4/Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99 Episode 4 premiered on January 30, 2024. In the new episode, Yumiella meets someone new, who can prove to be an important ally in the future. The episode is approximately 23 minutes long.

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord or Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99: Watashi wa Ura Bosudesuga Maō de wa Arimasen (悪役令嬢レベル99 ~私は裏ボスですが魔王ではありません~) is a new anime series based on the Japanese light novel series with the same name written by Satori Tanabata with illustrations by Tea. Directed by Minoru Yamaoka, the script of the show is written by Fumihiko Shimo and character designs handled by Hitomi Kaiho and Lo Ho Kim.

Mayu Maeshima lends her voice to the opening theme song, Love or Hate?, while Fairouz Ai and Rina Hidaka, embodying their respective characters, perform the ending theme song titled Suki ga Rebechi (好きがレベチ, Love on a Different Level). The series has been officially licensed by Crunchyroll, and Plus Media Networks Asia holds the licensing rights for the Southeast Asian region.

The story follows Yumiella Dolkness, who finds herself thrust into the world of Light Magic and the Hero, an otome RPG where she takes on the role of the clandestine boss. Determined to secure her survival, she dedicates her childhood to relentless level grinding. However, a twist of fate reveals an unintended consequence: Yumiella surpasses expectations, reaching the formidable Level 99 instead of the anticipated Level 10 for students. This overachievement not only attracts undue attention but also deviates from the meticulously crafted script of the game, setting the stage for unforeseen challenges in her reincarnated journey.

The new episode continues with the cliffhanger from the last episode where Alicia asks Yumiellia if she is the Demon Lord. Yumiella outright denies the accusation and wonders if her black hair and use of black magic raised the suspicions. However, Alicia’s friends quickly come to the rescue when she is the one who is accusing Yumiella. Questions arise from this situation that people often make assumptions due to preconceived notions.

However, it is also important to note that Yumiella is extremely anti-social. It might be because she grew up alone and raised herself. Moreover, she does not have the ability to understand social cues which comes off as awkward. What seems normal to her, is extremely weird for others but she has difficulty understanding the process.

Nevertheless, Yumiella might somehow find someone genuine. His name is Patrick Ashbatten and he is also a student at the academy. Other than being a helpful person, he is also an amazing leader. Moreover, he is also very receptive of Yumiella’s feelings who put himself in danger to protect her.

Villainess Level 99 Episode 4 Review: The Hidden Boss Attends Field Lessons

The episode skillfully shows us the developing story, giving viewers an interesting look at what might happen next. Also, the different view of the main bad character’s journey adds an intriguing aspect to the overall plot. Importantly, the bad character is not shown as naturally good but rather as someone who just wants a calm and peaceful life. Sadly, her dreams fall apart when she reaches the highest level without realizing it, after dedicating herself to it since childhood.

Credit is deserved for the animation presented in this production, as it highlights an impressive level of skill and careful attention to detail. The smoothness of character movements, along with the use of vibrant visual elements, collaboratively enhances the overall viewing experience, creating an enjoyable spectacle for the audience. It’s worth mentioning, though, that there are instances where the use of CGI becomes more prominent, somewhat overshadowing the otherwise seamless incorporation of traditional animation. Despite this occasional imbalance, the overall quality of the animation remains commendable, with the CGI elements contributing a distinctive dimension to the visual storytelling.
