Once again, the series boasts a talented trio of directors at its helm. Among them is Takahashi Hideya, renowned for his contributions to Sword Art Online, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, To LOVE-Ru, and more. The other directors include Kamei Takahiro, known for his work on Enen no Shouboutai, Captain Tsubasa (2018), and others, as well as Kimura Yasuhiro, who lent his expertise to Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.

Episode 2 of Urusei Yatsura 2nd Season can also be called the 2nd episode of うる星やつら第2期.

I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 2 Review and Recap

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 2 Review: Ryuunosuke Must Find Her Mother

Today’s episode was mostly about Ryuunosuke and less about Ataru and Lum. And I am not complaining at all, as it went exceptionally well. All this time, we have only seen Ryuunosuke and her father, but never really found out about her mother.

When in Ataru’s house, Ryuunosuke comes to understand how much she is deprived of motherly affection. She loved Ataru’s mother’s cooking and even expressed how her father was a lousy cook. Plus, he never treats her like a girl, and she hates that fact about him.

On the other hand, there is Ataru’s mom who is gentle, and caring and even feeds Ryuunosuke delicious meals. This experience awakens a need to know about her mother.

Thus, when she reaches home, the first question that she asks her father is how was her mother like. Her father, being the unique entity he is, makes hilarious jokes about the mother without giving any solid answers to her questions. This part is very funny as each time he remembers his wife, they change their name, occupation, and even appearance. We get the vibe that he does not want to share about his wife with his daughter. But why is that? Is he just very sad about losing his wife, or there is something else?

Even in the second half, Ryuunosuke’s search for her mother continues as she now asks her friends to help at least remember her mother’s face. They deduce that an album might be useful, which eventually, they find as well. But again, Ryuunosuke’s father’s antics and the end result are so tragically funny that you will laugh yet feel sad about Ryuunosuke’s fate.

This episode was really entertaining as it matched comedic elements with emotional scenes pretty well. Ryuunosuke usually does not get as much screen time, but when she does, she really steals the spotlight. I hope someday we get to see the face of her mother, who clearly is also fed up with her husband.

Verdict

All in all, this was an interesting and entertaining episode to boot. Even the last bit with the teacher, which came after the ending theme, was also funny. This anime really can make you laugh without trying with its bizarre characters and their very unique predicaments. If you like comic stuff, give this one a try.
