In his previous movies, he mainly displays how humans themselves can pose a threat to fellow humans, however, in this movie he taps into the horros of the unknown. An extraterrestrial creature or an alien, hovers around a faraway town preying on the civilians. However, the story is much more than that, it masterfully captures the repercussions of past trauma and broken relationships. Through symbolism and subtle hints, this horror movie makes for one of the most interesting ones in recent times.
The Menu
Directed by Mark Mylod and story by Will Tracy, The Menu will haunt you for days. The premise is simple, a bunch of wealthy people are invited to a faraway island where a renowned chef cooks food meticulously curated for them, until things turn for the worse gradually. Set on a premise that depicts the class division, the actual essence of the movie is its execution. The slow-paced and suspenseful sequences along with the eerie music will send chills down your spine. Moreover, Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes’s performances are the glue that brings everything together to make it a perfect example of a modern horror film.
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Initially, the movie appears to be a usual Gen Z-style horror film without much substance, but it will take you by surprise. Beneath all the crude talk there is an underlying message which will instantly connect with the younger audience. However, it does not necessarily leave out the millennials either, the sarcastic comments and the blunt dialogues will definitely touch a chord with the generation. Although the last twist is not too unpredictable, it is the gradual pacing of the story which makes it an interesting watch, keeping the audience hooked throughout.
X / Pearl
Directed by Ti West, X is a horror movie released in 2022 and subsequently its prequel, Pearl. Mia Goth is the lead actress in both films who also contributed to the writing process of the script. X follows a group of people who go to a secluded land to film an adult film. But when they reach the premises, their hosts are rather not as hospitable as they first seemed to be. It is a classic slasher film that will pump your adrenaline to the max.
On the other hand, Pearl showcases the story of a woman who slowly descends into madness due to multiple incidents. It is a thought-provoking plot about the deep complexities of human connections and delves deep into emotions. It is commendable how West manages to create two horror movies which are so different from each other in the same year.
