Oshi No Ko, or My Star, is a drama and supernatural anime based on a manga written by Aka Akasaka, who also wrote Kaguya-sama Love Is War and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. The anime adaptation is being directed by Daisuke Hiramaki, who has directed shows like Selection Project and Koisuru Asteroid in the past, alongside being a part of huge productions such as Bunny Girl Senpai and Naruto.

The series is being brought into the medium of anime by studio Doga Kobo, a relatively new studio which has been behind shows like Himotou Umaru-chan and Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie. This episode is also referred to as My Star Episode 10. Click here to read the review of the previous episode!

Oshi No Ko Episode 10 Review- Pressure

Video Oshi No Ko Episode 10 Review

We have already talked enough about it being moronic for a plotline in this show to be about the secondary main character following her mother’s footsteps to become an idol when the show is already about how absolutely horrendous that line of work is. So, let’s ignore that part and take a genuine look at Ruby, Kana, and MEM-cho to see if their parts in this episode were genuine enough to make it watchable despite its current plot’s weakness.

Short answer- strangely, yes. However, let’s go in a little deeper for the long answer. We ended the previous character as Ruby, and MEM realised that only one of the three members actually knew how to sing, and that was Kana. Poor old Kana. Her story of being a failed child actor whose career fizzled out as soon as she wasn’t eight anymore has been an interesting direction for the show to peek in from time to time, and as a result of it, Kana is a very well-fleshed-out and defined character.

Arima Kana Oshi No Ko Episode 10 Review

She is essentially washed out at the age of 17, and this move into being an idol is just one of the many things she has been a part of. However, this is the first time she is doing this with somebody else and not alone, so if this fails as all of her other attempts at a career have, she would feel responsible for the dreams of both MEM and Ruby. It is a nuanced take, and you can’t help but feel sad for Kana and the thoughts she has had about her career, which seem so inspired by the hate comments people love leaving. You want this to work out for her so she can feel better again.

It took ten episodes, but we finally saw Ruby get some shine in this episode. She has always been present and making random appearances in the show, but the show, for some reason, has never chosen to explore her mindset regarding what happened to their mother or her dreams of becoming an idol despite that. We learned about who she used to be when she was a dying teenager in a hospital and a revelation that was a little obvious but still managed to hit because it was connected to her past life. There is still much more to be done with her character, and I hope the show gets to it soon.

Oshi no Ko Episode 10 was mostly about B-Komachi gearing up and preparing for their debut at the festival. The highlight of it was how funny it was, and it had some great lines from Pieyon, who made a return to the show. As the series prepares to wind down with the final episode next week, it appears that the performance is going to be the big thing to end this season, which, while fitting, isn’t as interesting as Aqua’s murderer hunt and thus comes across as poorly paced on the part of the show. Let’s see how this series ends with the next episode!

Verdict

Oshi no Ko Episode 10 was a very fun time as the show did the preparations for the final episode and the debut performance. The final episode doesn’t promise much, but if a show could pull something meaty out of the bag, it is this one.
