Happy Family Conditions Apply Episode 9 Review: Emotional Growth Culminates in an Unprecedented Ending

Premiering on Prime Video on March 31, 2023, with the next chapter in the lot, Happy Family Conditions Apply Episode 9 stars the stunning ensemble of actors including Ratna Pathak Shah, Raj Babbar, Atul Kulkarni, Ayesha Jhulka, Sanah Kapur, Meenal Sahu, Raunaq Kamdar, and Ahaan Saboo. The Hindi family dramedy series is directed and created by Aatish Kapadia and Jamnadas Majethia, under the banner of Hats Off Production, the same production house that brought us the classic sitcoms of the early 2000s – Khichdi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai

Episode 9 out of the 10-episode series is out, as each one of them follows the usual sitcom trend of having a runtime under the 30 minute mark. Amazon’s Original Series follows the highs and lows of four generations of the joint Dholakia family living in Mumbai. Despite their respective quirky personalities and the arising dysfunctionalities, the family’s dynamics are just as relatable as they’re humorous.

Picking up right from last episode’s ending scene, the Dholakia family rush over to Jatin Kumar’s hospital after Pallavi’s heart-attack. On the one hand, the ladies of the house and Ramesh take her to the hospital, then on the other, Mansukh, Sanjuoy, Ayesha and Jacky, all reach together after the big revelation about Sanju and Jacky’s connection at Diana’s house.

Grave conversations between the family members teach Ramesh a lesson on prioritising one’s happiness. Only then can one devote oneself to others. Thereafter, Sanju and Jacky distance from each other, and later at the Dolakia house, Tisca reveals that they’ve dropped the plan of moving to their new home, and decided to stay back with the rest of the family so that she can look after Pallavi as well. This eventually leads to another emotional outpour, this time from Ramesh’s side.

He counters their ideas by agreeing with their initial plans of moving out as per their will. Recalling his sister’s words at the hospital, “Our first responsibility is towards ourselves”, Ramesh reminds them as well as himself that he and Pallavi ended up fully devoting their lives to their children and grandson. This barely left them with any space to work on their own happiness and identities as people. However, with Tisca and Sanju moving out to a different residence, they will be granted that freedom to work things out as per their own design, without being circumscribed within the boundaries set by the younger generations’ wishes.

Mansukh also played a huge role in making this happen as he continued to speak his mind and heart openly with his son, Ramesh, who finally understood how Sanju and Tisca moving out will actually work for each of their betterment, and that it doesn’t necessarily point towards cutting off ties with the family. This marks a cause for celebration and a group hug among the three men of the house.

In the meantime, the entire family secretly plots to organise a surprise baby shower for Tisca, which actually is meant to be a a plot to deceive Hemlata, while a surprise wedding ceremony is planned for her and Mansukh. It makes us wonder that things are finally wrapped up since this is the penultimate episode of the series. However, the show takes a drastically dramatic turn, much like many Bollywood movies.

With the entire family all huddled up together for the happy ceremony at a banquet inside a mall, the happy ending for these characters gets pulled away from their possession. A terrorist group, of sorts, breaks into the mall and hijacks the place by initiating a lockdown and shooting fire at the civilians inside.

Happy Family Conditions Apply Episode 9: Final Thoughts

The penultimate episode brings in the much-awaited emotional growth in Ramesh’s character. And while the incident of Pallavi’s heart attack may have disseminated him with a piece of advice he dearly needed, those words could’ve easily pointed towards Sanju’s closeted reality. It almost arose as a foreshadowing moment that he’ll open up to his family eventually. However, it doesn’t happen in this episode.

This brings us to – the episode’s ending, with terrorists breaking in and assuming control over the place. Although it may have left the audiences bewildered, it highlights a stock feature utilised by comedy and lighthearted Bollywood movies – the breakout of one last catastrophe to make the final resolution seem even more cathartic.

Happy Family Conditions Apply Episode 9 Raj Babbar

All emotional issues seemed to have been resolved till now – Tisca’s new job, the family heading out to meet Ayesha’s potential groom in the previous episode, Pallavi’s heart attack, and even Ramesh’s individual growth as a person outside his image as Sanju’s father or Aryan’s grandfather. Circling back to Sanju’s case, this new development may be related to his individual arc’s final resolution, but to find out how that happens, we’ll have to tune into the last episode of the series.

All episodes of the series are now streaming on Prime Video.
