The Last of Us Episode 6 Review

After a traumatic episode involving multiple deaths and a suicide, there had to be a breather, and this episode does that extremely well. While it started with some tense threats and action, the narrative continued to give an insight into the characters rather than the clickers trying to hunt them. What this show is doing extremely well is building a rich story while also giving characters vivid personalities simultaneously.

We see Joel and Ellie make their way from the rebellion, and the episode opens with a couple in the middle of nowhere, extending their hospitality toward the travelling duo. They are warned of danger and people who may tear them apart, leaving only blood and bodies in their wake. Obviously, the two don’t care about the danger and make their way toward the fireflies in hopes of finding Tommy, Joel’s brother.

There may not have been any clickers or much action in this episode, but it was filled with strides in character development, especially for Joel, who has had to come to terms with his place in the world and the future where people may actually be cured if Ellie reaches the Fireflies base.

This is perhaps the first time there is no underlying tension in the episode, and we feel the same suspicion our protagonists feel. Fans of the show now know not to expect anything good to happen to the side characters (might we remind you of Sam, Henry, Sarah, Bill and Frank in the long list of casualties). Naturally, an existential crisis makes an appearance for the two characters as they settle into this unlikely calm, one they may not have for long.

Pedro Pascal never disappoints, but this episode just highlights his insane emotional range and the ability he has as an actor and character to compartmentalize his emotions. For Bella Ramsey, the last episode’s gasp, in the end, teed this writer towards the edge into fully rooting for more emotionally heavy scenes for her. The acting on every stand is incredible, there are some character arcs that come full circle, and they would have been incomplete without the presence of someone as talented as these two actors.

Props to the production design and story team for making this post-apocalyptic world as accurate as possible. Their priorities are set right, and people have been collecting resources that they actually need. As a person who menstruates, this TV series is the first mainstream pop culture text to acknowledge that even though it is a survival situation, people may have to carry important hygiene products in order to not die of infection.

Final Thoughts

Craig Mazin continues to escalate audience expectations when it comes to the show, there may be fewer clickers and less action in the series, but it doesn’t take away from the essence of the story, which is Joel and Ellie. Being central characters, they have to carry the entire series on their backs, and it must be hurting because they have been doing exactly that. Especially in this episode, it becomes exceedingly clear that the character dynamics are the fundamental reasons why this show does so well.

There is something to be said when a survivalist show about zombies and gun violence makes you cry. The Last of Us is a gold mine, and let’s just hope the creators keep digging in.
