Gobhir Joler Maach Review: Twisted Mystery Will Give You the Ick

Gobhir Joler Maach is a mystery drama series directed by Suman Das and stars Swastika Dutta, Trina Saha, Ushasi Ray, Ananya Sen, Shoumo Banerjee, Rajdeep Gupta, Prantik Banerjee, Judhajit Sarkar and Arpan Ghoshal. The series has 8 episodes, each with a runtime of around 25 minutes.

Hoichoi’s description of the series reads:

The seemingly perfect lives of four childhood friends get intertwined in the maze of a secret game of seduction. But when the game turns fatal, the secret that can ruin them becomes the only thing that can save them!

– Gobhir Joler Maach Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

Gobhir Joler Maach is truly extraordinary in the way that it victim blames to such an extent that you would feel attacked if you’d had something similar happen to you and probably traumatise (or retraumatise) yourself in the process. I almost find it insulting how the series starts; the friends’ cocky victim-blaming attitude and the claims that men literally cannot think for themselves is all different levels of messed up.

But is this the reason why watching their seemingly perfect lives crumble is all the more hilarious? Probably. I just don’t understand how three adults (sure, they are horrible people, but do you have to be stupid?) can agree to do this to stroke their own egos. It’s not just about the cheating either, it’s just so manipulative. You blow up your life with your husband and your friendship along with it.

How absolutely baffling.

Either way, Gobhir Joler Maach is that oversmart classmate whom you love to hate. It’s a story that really is twisty but is just so unbelievably stupid at the same time that you watch it while scratching your head. The transition sequences are cocky as heck and are fun at first when it catches you by surprise, but it just gets tiring after a while, exactly like the storyline.

At first, you think sure, this is so fun. But man, the more you watch the women making this difficult for no reason, the more you wonder how they have lived their lives this far being so naïve. Plus, let’s not forget the manipulation that they put each other through – are they naïve, stupid or just plain bad people? Or maybe it’s a combination of all of these things.

It’s very difficult to watch a show where you don’t relate to or sympathise with any of the characters. Together and separately, the friends are just horrible people. With friends like these, who needs enemies, am I right? But curiously enough, I couldn’t help but think how the show makes a mockery out of the women, but the men are somehow all these innocent and pure human beings who don’t know how to flip a fried fish (if you know you know).

It reminded me of Luv Ranjan’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama series, somewhat, with very one-toned characters. Why must characters be this black and white? Rarely in life do we find people who are like this. If anything, there are several shades to people and rarely is it possible to put anyone in a certain box.

Anyway, the storyline, as I mentioned earlier, is twisted. Chandrima’s death brings forth several things that you wouldn’t think of happening, but, hey, they happen. The trailer promised a crazy time, and man, it’s just so over-the-top and cringe. In the end, you wouldn’t be able to figure out who the killer is, but the series leaves such a bad taste in your mouth that you can’t watch it or leave. This is what toxic relationships look like, folks.

And you know what the funniest thing about all of this is – it’s exactly like Indu. The way the story unfolds will remind you of that show, so much so that it made me laugh out loud.

Summing Up: Gobhir Joler Maach
