The dismaying news has surfaced after all with Henry Cavill’s disheartening announcement about his status as the returning DCU mega superhero, Superman. Although the character stands in as a symbol for hope, Cavill’s presence in the DCU has long been a disputed issue, hanging in limbo.
Ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran’s appointment as the new chief heads at DC Studios, some major shifts have been ongoing in an attempt to fix a trajectory for the future of the super universe. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam release initiated a new wave for the DC film-verse, putting Cavill’s Superman back into the conversation. However, all those efforts seem to have washed away in vain when on December 15, 2022, the former Man of Steel actor took to his Instagram to speak of the final standing of his commanding presence in the films.

In his post, he details that in a meeting with Gunn and Safran, the deal has been finalised, for better or for worse, that his version of the Superman won’t be moving forward anymore as they “have a universe to build”. His final words attempt to soften the blow by stating, “we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around.” This comes as an overturning state of events when put parallel to his former post on Instagram, sparking a hope for his character’s renewal.
And this is comes along with by another news surrounding Krypton’s Son’s footing as James Gunn is headed in a new direction with the caped character. He puts the information across in one of his latest tweets, claiming, “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
The studios is also in talks with the Batman actor Ben Affleck at the moment to possibly direct a new chapter of the storyline. Gunn once again clarified the same on his Twitter profile with the following tweet, “Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.” Moreover, another discussion has consolidated the present position of another major character in the universe as the studios has also turned away from Patty Jenkins’ vision of the third Wonder Woman movie.
