Urusei Yatsura Episode 4 Review and Recap – Finding the Right Man

The new episode of Urusei Yatsura has brought new problems into the lives of Ataru and his friends. From the beginning, we are shown the rivalry between the two factions, including Ataru and Lum on one side and Mendo and Shinobu on the other side.

Even though they are playing tennis against each other, we all know why this rivalry exists. Ataru wants Shinobu. Hence, he hates Mendo, while Mendo hates Ataru because he wants Lum.

But their tennis ball comically lands on a group of tengu aliens, escorting their princess out of the jungle in her hyperbaric chamber. And that is how we get introduced to another brand new character, princess Kurama, who instantly makes Mendo and Ataru her fans with her beauty.

Lucky for Mendo, the aliens were apparently searching for a hottie anyway for their princess. Preferably, a husband like Mendo to wake Kurama up from her slumber with a passionate kiss. It is also an essential custom where one must marry the person who awakens them up with a kiss.

This is where we witness just how similar Ataru and Mendo are, as Mendo quickly agrees to this proposition and readies himself for the deed. But before he can do anything, Ataru takes the chance and, in a hilarious display of pervertedness, he manages to kiss the princess.

Waking up, she now thinks that Mendo is the one to kiss her, and Ataru is determined to make her know the truth. Thus starts a comic attempt to establish the correct husband for this beautiful and pushy princess.

This episode was my favourite. I was laughing the entire time, witnessing the quirkiness of the characters and how idiotic their whole situation is. Mendo is not the prim and proper guy who loves only one as he quickly shifts his love from Lum to princess Kurama.

Ataru is the same who is willing to love almost any and every beautiful woman apart from his wife, Lum, who is gorgeous enough. This series is a harem anime, but it still portrays the genre in a unique light where the women, apart from Lum, absolutely do not want to be with the protagonist. And it is Ataru himself who tries to get their attention at any cost.

The gags are familiar yet nostalgic, which surprisingly doesn’t bother me and makes me laugh even more. It is not an anime made to race with the newly released ones, but it is something that one should enjoy without any prior expectations.

Verdict

I loved this episode and am more excited than ever for the next one now that I can guess how the anime will go on with its story. Almost every episode is a loose continuation of the previous one, yet you can enjoy the episodes as standalone pieces. This anime is not for those looking for a serious plot that will make you think, but it does its job of entertaining you quite well. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
