Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities was definitely a spine-chilling ride, with some deepest and darkest horror fantasy stories. Helmed by some of the biggest names in the genre, the eight-part anthology perfectly captures the cinematic storytelling of horror and suspense.
Each episode of the series starts with an introduction, from the horror maestro himself. Followed by a petrifying tale of mythologies and monsters, based on the genius works of authors like HP Lovecraft and others. Here is a list of the 5 most terrifying moments from the series.
1. The Hideous Creature from Lot 36
Lot 36 was the first episode of the series, which starred Tim Nelson in the role of Nick, a prejudiced filled retired vet who faces the circumstances of his own greed. The episode was based on Guillermo del Toro’s short story, and revolved around a strange lot, with an evil secret of its own.
This episode from Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities also gave us the first scare of the season, with a hideous devil-shaped creature. The horror in the tale excels everything when the creature displays the inhumane power of sucking individuals inside him, through some creepy-looking tentacles (attached to his face and body). 2. The Happy Ending of Dreams in the Witch House
Dreams in the Witch House featured the fan favourite Ruper Grint in the role of Walter Gilman. A member of the spiritualistic society, that embarks on a mission to retrieve her dead twin sister from the other side of the living world. The premise of the episode is as exciting as it gets, along with a definitive character arc from the actor.
However, it is the foretold happy ending of the episode which steals the show. Even though some might argue the “Happy Part” is subjective, the classic twist to the horror story, involving a human headed rat is freakingly hellish, to say the least.
3. The Final Victim of Pickman’s Model
This episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities in particular is set in the twentieth century, and explores the dark and twisted relation between two painters. A secluded one, whose paintings denote the hidden truth of the society, and a rich and successful artist, facing the turmoil of the dark forces behind the former’s vision.
Pickman’s painting haunts the entire lifestyle of the successful artist. Even to the point of affecting his family, including a naive wife and young child. The final victim reveal of Pickman’s dark art, is bound to shake your system, with disgust and horror.
4. Literally everything in the Autopsy
The Autopsy is one of the most graphic episode of the Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and is set around a pathologist dying from stomach cancer, who investigates the bodies of ten ambushed mine workers. The episode features some gut spoiling scenes (literally) and also has one of the scariest creatures.
Each and every part of the autopsy scene in filled with suspense, revealtion, and disgust. All of which forms the core part of the episode, and leaves us with an haunting after image.
5. The Obsession Identity of The Outside
The Outside is another fine episode of the series which presents a devilish picture of obsession and self critique. The one hour episode revolves around Stacey, a woman in her thirties, who gets tired of being the same underconfident self, and explores a creepy lotion to enhance her skin.
The humanoid version of the lotion is daunting to watch. It will give you all the chills in the right amount, and still won’t prepare you for the horrific end. Moreover, the entire episode is horror filled and shocking till the very end.
