Mo Ending Explained: Does Najjar Family Finally Get the Citizenship? Why Mo is in Mexico?

Mo is semi-autobiographical comedy series on Netflix, about a man in Texas, straddling the line between two cultures, three languages and a pending asylum request while hustling to support his Palestinian family. Created by comedians Mo Amer and Ramy Youssef, there are 8 episodes in total with a runtime of about 30 minutes.

The Najjar family are living as asylees in the US for the past two decades and have yet to get their citizenship. With no legal papers, Mo gets fired from his job, leading him to work with shady side hustles to support his family. But for him getting ahead in life comes with several setbacks.

Mo Ending Explained

It all starts with Mo Najjar losing his job at the phone repair shop after an ICE raid makes his boss wary of keeping an employee who does not have citizenship. He starts selling knockoffs of high brands as a side hustle while working as a strip club DJ. Of course, he keeps it all a secret from his family.

Moreover, he gets shot while buying cat food at a grocery store and gets addicted to codeine. At first, it was to numb the pain of the injury but soon he starts to abuse the substance to swallow the bitter truth about his father’s torturous death and the guilt of not being able to provide for the family.

On the brighter side, the new lawyer Lizzie Horowitz looks promising and might be able to help the Najjar family get due citizenship. Mo also finds stability in a new gig at the olive farm, until a merch deal goes south, involving drug cartels. Hoping to expand the shop, his girlfriend Maria meets with an investor but the pitch doesn’t go to plan.

Still from Mo

From reuniting with his estranged sister to rescuing his autistic brother from his job mishap, more pressure builds up on him. In between this, flashbacks of his family’s past reveal the situation that they fled from and how they came into the country after so many struggles and going through dangerous situations.

They even get so close to getting citizenship when the judge turns out to be an acquaintance, who knew his father. But due to that reason, he is unable to proceed and once again, their process gets delayed. Saddened by it Mo is on the verge as Maria also broke up with him, as she couldn’t trust him with all the hiding and lying about his work.

His mother, however, tries to mend ways with Maria and even starts her own olive oil business. Looking at how his family keeps moving forward and doesn’t wholly depend on him, he confesses what he was up to and tries to strike up a deal with the olive farm owner to set up a refinery.

He promises to bring back the stolen olive trees with the help of the fake olive tracker, he had put on. But he and Nick end up being trapped in the robber’s truck that is taking the plants away and transporting them to Mexico. Nick being a legal citizen can go through the border easily, but without any legal paper, Mo is an illegal immigrant and can get in trouble because of it.

Also, the robber turns out to be Manny, another worker at the olive farm and listening to Mo’s traumatic past, he lets him take 3 olive trees back and strike up a deal with the coyotes who help Mexicans without legal papers, cross the border. But as things were going on track, the coyotes get attacked by their enemy gang.

Scared of all the chaos, Mo steals a bike and starts running away from them. It makes the coyotes think he is on with the enemy gang and thus, starts to chase him. In the end, he calls up Maria while being chased by gangsters. From the looks of it, Mo is in for another rollercoaster ride, until he could reach the US, only if he is able to escape the coyotes.

Mo is currently streaming on Netflix.
