For Jojo Ending Explained

Towards the end of the film, we see Jojo and Paula get into a massive fight after Paula deliberately puts Ellin (Jojo’s would-be husband’s ex) in the picture. The two friends fight by the beach and throw each other in a ditch. After a hot and heated fight, they get inside their care and explain things to each other.

According to Paula, Daniel is not the right man for Jojo and thus, her efforts to save her. Meanwhile, Jojo did not want any drama to unfold in front of so many people and ultimately wants to make her own decisions and mistakes. Jojo wants to live her life her way and asks Paula to do the same. The two grab some food and later end up with a group by the beach and share one last dance, where Paula asks Jojo to come home with her to which Jojo does not reply, just nods. Soon after, we see Paula standing alone by the vast shore of the beach.

The screen cuts to blank and follows a wedding procession by the beach. Turns out, it is Daniel and Jojo’s wedding. However, we do not see Paula as a part of the ceremony or the procession as the two get married.

This particular ending in regards to the wedding can be interpreted in two ways. One is that it actually happened- Jojo and Daniel did get married! Jojo must have left Paula by the beach and stuck to her belief to marry Daniel, irrespective of the drama.

Another way to look at the wedding is that it is a dream. The entire film focuses more on Paula and her feelings towards Jojo than the other way around. It isn’t until the final act that we get to hear what Jojo wants and seeks. The wedding-oriented ending could be an epilogue from Jojo that could indicate that she did head back to Berlin with Paula but, regretted her decision and dreams about an alternate end to her story.
