Trevor: The Musical Review: Uplifting and Empowering

The musical is adapted from the Academy Award-winning short film Trevor, directed by Peggy Rajski, produced by Randy Stone and written by Celeste Lecesne. It inspired the nonprofit organization The Trevor Project, now the world’s most significant suicide prevention and mental health organization for LGBTQ+ young people.

The Endearing Display of Courage By Trevor is Captured in Every Moment of the Musical

Trevor: The Musical is a heart-warming musical that brings to life the story of many bullied gay teens. Trevor is a thirteen-year-old and dreams of being a performer. He is trying to deal with finishing his last year of middle school and dealing with the bullies that have been bothering him since childhood.

The star producer and director are great because they attract talent to produce the best work possible. It’s also great when they have experience delivering a show with lessons learned from several seasons prior that can be applied to making an excellent show. Last but not least, cast diversity makes every performance more accessible and keeps your attention focused and invested in both stories being told. The Musical works wonders as a spectacular showcase for the LGBTQ+ people.

The power of the music lies in The Trevor Project’s life-saving work in the LGBTQ+ community, which needs nothing more than the source material to tell a beautiful story about families and young people struggling with self-acceptance. It promises that by streaming it online and making it free for anybody to watch, the story will be more widely spread — hopefully saving lives and maybe even changing some minds.

The Musical is a Charming, Funny and Insightful Production of the Main Character: Trevor

The musical is an uplifting and empowering musical educating people about the importance of acceptance and kindness. The play follows that character’s life story, featuring an endearing teen cast and lively Diana Ross-inspired score.

It goes out of its way to make the viewer aware that the film version is worth checking out. The film captures the essential aspects of the story but in ways that don’t necessarily align with what you may have seen in the film. It could be argued that Trevor doesn’t need to be adapted this way. Still, it’s not a bad idea for those who aren’t as familiar with LGBTQ+ issues or who have trouble accepting others for their sexual orientation and gender identity.

And despite its limitations, The Musical can offer more than just a story about self-acceptance and support from others. It does so in ways that those unfamiliar with the source material — or possibly those without much experience seeing live theatrical productions — can get behind.

Every Performance like Trevor Explores the Depth and Intensity of the Premise of the Musical

The musical doesn’t wallow in sadness or tragedy but instead celebrates the courage of this Trevor and the cast and the impact their short-lived activism had on their high school. In the end, because the message is hope for a broader community of students, it strikes an effective balance between calling for action and showing the positive effects of not giving up.

There’s undoubtedly a whimsical edge to Trevor, but Hagelberger’s performance also has a sprinkling of gravity and melancholy. And the movie constantly deals with bullying, which proves that maybe we’ve been going about this whole thing backwards. Everyone is different, after all, and perhaps there are more differences inside than outside of us. It might be worthwhile to look at our biases before putting them on other people. What is just “being ourselves”?

To watch Trevor is to appreciate its message: Be yourself, and you can accomplish anything.

Stream it or Skip It?

Trevor may have originally been a theatre production, but the movie version will likely be just as fun. If you’re ready to see an honest depiction of adolescence, then Trevor: The Musical could work for you.

Here’s a feel-good musical that wholeheartedly supports the LGBTQ+ community. The Musical is a great choice. It’s definitely worth your time and money.

Trevor: The Musical is currently streaming on Disney+Hotstar.
