Stephen Sondheim, the Broadway Icon Passes Away at 91

Stephen Sondheim has always been a dominant voice in musical theatre and legend for the second half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, the famous composer of ‘Sweeney Todd’ met his demise at the age of 91. Sondheim has been an influential figure for the generations who invest themselves in theatre. He has created landmark pieces like ‘Company’ and ‘Follies’ and his famous ballad ‘Send in the Clowns’ has been remade so many times including people like Frank Sinatra and Judy Collins.

Sondheim is not only a protege of Oscar Hammerstein II but also, the winner of the most number Tony awards ever for a composer. And, even though he never achieved the remarkable success that can be called unparalleled, he played his part well in altering and expanding the periphery of American musical theatre. Thus, the news of his death is a rather sad crushing wave that has hit everyone.

Stephen Sondheim, the Broadway icon died on Friday, November 26th at his home in Roxbury, Conn, reports Variety. The composer’s representative confirmed the information to CBS News. Meanwhile, other celebrities have taken over their social media handles to express their emotions over this sad news.

Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway debut happened in 1953 with the musical “Saturday Night,” for which he was to write the music and lyrics. The icon’s best works include ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’, ‘Company’, ‘Sweeney Todd’, Pacific Overtures’. The man will truly be missed for everything he has ever done for us.
