Many of us are familiar with, Kenny Sebastian, an Indian multi-talented stand-up comedian. Sebastian started his journey back in 2008 and since then, he has toured to United States, Singapore, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Australia. There has been no turning back for him. This Friday, Netflix released a one-hour Kenny Sebastian stand-up episode featuring him and it included everything ranging from jokes to music to instruments. A wholesome deal.
But the question is – Is Kenny Sebastian, The Most Interesting Person In The Room? Well, he might not be the most interesting person in the room, but he’s definitely the one you’ll remember whenever you make tea, dosa or when you cuddle. Apart from being a good comedian that has the power to keep you hooked for an hour. One of the talents I didn’t know Sebastian has is singing. Oh, what a beautiful voice.
The Sebastian Touch Of Mundane and Funny…
Throughout his one-hour segment, Kenny talks about things ranging from ‘chappals’ to ‘cuddles,’ from the ‘worthiness of shoes and heels’ to the ‘self-worth’ babies have and to the classic ‘height jokes.’ It is here that you’ll realize the scope for this special. Kenny’s intention is to talk about average and mundane things and enjoy their average and mundane qualities.
Kenny has undying energy throughout his set that keeps viewers watching. The perfect mix of jokes and music is brilliantly done. He knows when his jokes fizzle out and when its time to hit the high-key again. Except for the 15 mins he talked about an ostrich. I can’t deny that the discussion about chappals and birds just went on and on and felt like a drag. But the last performance made up for every overly done part.
He also talks about the relatable wall of expectations no one can jump unless and until they complete it but no matter what it is, one should always follow what his heart wants.
Kenny’s father is a former IITian and he has a Fine Arts degree which obviously does not bring any pride to the expectation. But he did what he had to! And that’s how true dreams are followed.
The stand-up does not come with a side of socio-political jargon or witty remarks on the sorry state of affairs in the country. It instead basks in the knowledge of being silly. But the jokes aren’t exactly meaningless. Kenny has an undertone of taunts about man-made constructs like height, classicism, and the fragility of self-worth.
Referring to the whole, being the most interesting person in the room. Kenny played it safe with his jokes which definitely does not make him the most interesting person in the room. The classic how chappals are thrown carelessly while shoes are kept in a rack specifically named after them or the usual tallboys and short girl jokes where the shorter person yells to be heard – the jokes seemed stereotypical.
