What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is an Asian spice that comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. Pretty much all turmeric comes from the ginger community. Additionally, turmeric has a secret ingredient called curcumin, which is the reason why the spice is yellow in colour and makes the stain so hard when it’s imprinted. Curcumin is rich in antioxidants and has soothing anti-inflammatory effects.

Boosts Memory Power

A clinical study proved that adults who consumed 90 mg of turmeric twice a day for one year and a half showed improved memory power (people with dementia were excluded). However, when curcumin has the capacity to boost memory power, many researchers are focusing on finding evidence that dementia and other similar disorders can be aided by the spice.

Heals Inflammation

Turmeric and the curcumin ingredient it contains are well-known as inflammation-healing agents. To be honest, a sufficient amount of curcumin would be more beneficial than anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin. However, there are more studies that are being performed to confirm the fact with solid scientific evidence.

As curcumin is said to cure chronic inflammation as well, doctors are believing that bowel diseases, pancreatitis, arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions could be treated.

May Help Diabetes

People who have type 1 and type 2 diabetes are said to benefit from turmeric because a study found that curcumin helps control blood sugar, resist insulin, and lower blood lipids. Various studies have been conducted on animals (in a non-harmful manner) to demonstrate that the diabetes level in animals was indeed reduced with the help of curcumin.

Heart Disease Risks are Lowered

As turmeric aids in reducing inflammation and oxidation, the chances of developing heart diseases are also lowered. According to some reports, turmeric can help reverse the progression of heart disease. There was a study where middle-aged people took curcumin supplements for 2 to 3 months, and their blood pressure was controlled.

Fights Depression

Who would have thought a spice could heal a mental disorder? Depression is one of the most widely known mental disorders that almost every person will encounter once in their lifetime. It seems like a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) can help reduce depression.

The best part is that curcumin in turmeric boosts BDNF massively, according to a study. Moreover, turmeric also has the effect of Prozac and helps in fighting depression symptoms by stimulating happy chemicals in the brain.

Prevents Cancer

Cancer growth is linked to inflammation, thus turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties go hand in hand. Curcumin is said to be extremely beneficial in the treatment of pancreatic, prostate, breast, gastric, and colorectal cancer.

To help with this foundation, there was research done on mice that showed tumour cell spread becoming slower and less with the help of curcumin. Hence, researchers are now trying to find out whether this will be the same in human bodies.

Final Thoughts

Turmeric’s benefits are still being counted, as the spice contains more secrets. We hope that as of now, with the above-mentioned benefits, you will improve your lifestyle and health. Before including turmeric in your diet, always consult your doctor to see if you have any allergies to it. Also, never take too much turmeric, for it can create another set of problems.
