56 Days Ending Explained

The series starts with Ciara and Oliver meeting unexpectedly for the first time in a supermarket and immediately hitting it off. The story is told non-linearly, with an unidentified and half-melted body found in Oliver’s bathroom in the present and the couple’s relationship progressing in the past.

Throughout the series, the police try to find out the truth behind the murder, wondering whether it is Ciara or Oliver in the tub. Meanwhile, we also see the past converging with the present, as we see the circumstances that led to the dead body in the tub. In the end, we learn that it’s Dan Troxler, Oliver’s therapist, in the tub.

Why was he killed?

Dan has been a silent manipulator throughout the series, pulling the strings such that he can control Oliver and the narrative while getting a steady paycheck from Oliver’s extremely wealthy family. In the last episode, it is revealed that Dan was not a therapist and has been in trouble with the law for years. He is a fraud who has been taking advantage of everyone for his own gain.

Thus, when he confronted Oliver in front of Ciara, she attacked him when he tried to pit the two against one another, trying to keep Oliver isolated and dependent on him. Understanding his tactics, Ciara kills Dan to get Oliver out of his grasp.

Who is Ciara? Why is she following Oliver?

This story starts way back in high school, when Oliver and his friends, Shane and Paul, were involved in a shocking murder wherein Oliver killed Paul, and then Shane was sent to prison for life. It is shown that Dan had manipulated Oliver into doing this and that he had wanted to turn himself in originally. He also manipulated Shane into taking his own life, destroying Shane’s family in the process, as this resulted in their father taking his life as well.

Ciara is Shane’s younger sister, and she comes back to take revenge on Oliver for taking her brother’s life. However, she realises that Oliver wasn’t all to blame for things happening in the way that they do and eventually forgives him.

What happens in the end?

In the end, Karl Connolly plants evidence implicating Lee Reardon’s abusive partner and drug peddler to take the fall for Dan’s murder to get him out of Lee’s life once and for all. Meanwhile, Oliver, who at first wanted to surrender to the police for his role in everything, decides against it and runs away with Ciara to start his life afresh, and the two have a baby as well. The ending showcases Ciara happy and content with her life as she asks her mother to move on as well, and gives her a big chunk of money to restart their lives.
